XAI’S UNPERMITTED TURBINES TO REMAIN UNTIL JULY 2027
SpaceX says 69 temporary gas turbines are powering xAI’s Colossus data centers near Memphis. They will be phased out as a permitted 1.2 GW natural-gas plant comes online, with full removal scheduled for July 2027.
The replacement plant will use 41 turbines ranging from 16.48 MW to 50 MW. SpaceX separately plans to spend $2.8B on data-center turbines over three years.
SpaceX argues the existing trailer-mounted units do not require permits. Environmental groups suing the company disagree, warning the fleet could emit more than 2,000 tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides annually.
