A Pika employee shared Higgsfield’s video in the company Slack, “and the whole company was basically like, ‘What? This is literally the video that we just put out with all of the skills that we just developed as well,’” said **Linday Brillson**, who heads brand and content at Pika. It was “completely the same creative conceit,” she said.
Spokespeople for Higgsfield said it didn’t copy Pika. Marketing videos of users talking to agents on their computers aren’t new, they said, and Higgsfield has been putting out videos of using agents to create brands for months. They also said Higgsfield didn’t see Pika’s video until after releasing its own, and five days wouldn’t be enough time to turn around such a video.
Whoever’s right, the drama shows that AI is bringing down the cost of replication in video marketing. That’s a version of what’s already happened in software, where AI coding agents have established that AI makes imitation inexpensive, a reality that has shaken software stocks and raised the spectre of a “SaaSpocalypse.” Skills like Pika’s that allow agents to better handle professional work have stoked those fears for companies developing software for particular professions, such as law.
Similarly, marketing videos could quickly lose their originality as competitors imitate the most successful videos. Counterintuitively, that could mean that even though AI tools are making it cheaper than ever to turn creative ideas into content, some companies could end up focusing less on coming up with new creative marketing ideas.
Indeed, the ability to copy competitors’ ads is a feature that Higgsfield has been advertising. [One of its videos](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYPh10lojLc/) shows a user prompting Claude to “find the best ads my competitors are running in meta ads library” to “generate 20 videos based on what’s working for me and my competitors.” (Higgsfield’s agent integrations can help with a range of marketing-related tasks, such as coming up with messaging ideas and writing product explainer scripts.
Pika might respond by focusing its marketing efforts on “bigger swings,” said Brillson. “If it’s not as big of a launch, maybe we don’t need to pour our hearts into it.”
Of course, it has always been possible for companies to imitate each other’s ads, but norms have generally prevented blatant plagiarism. As AI increases the volume of content, those norms are facing new pressure.
“I would like for us as an industry to have some norms and some standards,” said Brillson. “I think the challenge is that everything is moving so quickly and people are putting things out so frequently that any one piece of creative [work] is getting less attention.”
A spokesperson for Higgsfield said that it’s standard for new technologies to go through a period of convergence, pointing to apps that have adopted similar user interfaces and checkout features.
The most noticeable difference between Pika and Higgsfield’s videos is how they end. In Pika’s the founder tentatively asks “So, are we done?” The disembodied voice again says “Nope!” and the founder collapses onto his keyboard in exhaustion.
In Higgsfield’s, the founder clicks “deploy marketing” and dollar bills blast out of his laptop screen, bowling him over.
