My [trip to Europe](https://www.flyoverstocks.com/p/what-six-weeks-in-europe-taught-me) this summer convinced me that the region needs better solutions for keeping its residents and visitors cool in the summer months.
According [to the IEA](https://science.nasa.gov/earth/europes-scorching-summer/), only 23% of European homes have air conditioning compared with 90% of homes in the US. As the chart below illustrates, China is rapidly approaching similar levels to the US. Southeast Asia and India also appear to be committed to increased use of air conditioning.

There are various reasons why Europe has been slower to adopt air conditioning, including environmental concerns, higher energy costs relative to North American and elsewhere, older buildings that are expensive and challenging to retrofit, and continued perception that it’s not necessary for only a short period of the year.
Unfortunately, European summer heatwaves are becoming the rule rather than the exception. What’s more, the intensity of those heatwaves has both economic and human costs that can’t be dismissed, as they are weighing on GDP growth and resulting in preventable sicknesses and deaths. [Excessive heat](https://healthpolicy.fsi.stanford.edu/news/when-heat-outpaces-human-body-warming-aging-world-risk) is particularly impactful on the elderly - a demographic that’s growing rapidly in developed markets.

Given refrigerant and efficiency regulations and country-by-country barriers such as building codes, permitting, and noise ordinances, a widespread and immediate demand spike for air conditioning across the region is unlikely. However, the demand trend line for air conditioning is positive and likely to remain so for at least a decade.
This makes the European air conditioning market worth a closer look. Below, you’ll find a Flyover Stock profile of a company I believe is well positioned to capitalize on the trend and is trading at a reasonable valuation.

Change is needed to the way Europe deals with regular summer heatwaves
