The U.S. government is limiting Microsoft’s ability to sponsor visas for certain immigrant workers, Vice President J.D. Vance said Thursday, citing an “ongoing investigation” into claims that Microsoft laid off Americans while continuing to hire more immigrants.
Vance said immigrants who work for Microsoft with H-1B visas will no longer be allowed to apply for permanent residency in the U.S. The White House said it was taking similar actions against consulting firms Infosys, Cognizant, and Tata Communications. And Vance said the White House was also investigating several universities’ sponsorships of J-visas for students seeking to live and work in the U.S.
“If you do the math, for every worker that Microsoft laid off, they replaced that worker with one and a half foreign indentured servants,” Vance said.
Several hours after Vance’s [announcement](https://x.com/VP/status/2108205493210497140), Microsoft published a [blog post](https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2026/10/08/microsoft-comment-on-recent-immigration-questions/) stating that 80% of its 6,000 H-1B visa applications last year were for workers that the company already employed within the U.S., not immigrants who were just arriving.
“Microsoft only files H-1B petitions for those who meet the rigorous standards of this visa category,” Microsoft said in the blog post. “We pay our H-1B employees the same as any other employees doing comparable work.”
Vance’s announcement came as CEO Satya Nadella was scheduled to receive a National Medal of Technology from the White House later Thursday.
President Donald Trump’s supporters have for years called on the administration to limit H-1B visas, arguing they take jobs away from Americans, while his backers in the tech industry like Elon Musk have argued against such restrictions. Trump last year [said he would raise the application fee](https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/microsoft-amazon-warn-foreign-staffers-stay-u-s-due-h-1b-fee?rc=geicgp) for H-1B visas to make them costlier for companies to sponsor.
Microsoft said in a statement it pays H-1B employees the same as other employees and primarily sponsors visas for immigrants already working in the U.S.
