Chinese AI developer MiniMax said its annualized revenue run rate jumped to $800 million this month, from $150 million in February, thanks to demand from enterprise customers for its new AI video model and large language models.
The growth reflects an ongoing shift in the Shanghai-based company’s business model. MiniMax, which a year ago generated the majority of its revenue from consumer products such as its Talkie AI roleplay chat app, has shifted its priorities over the past year to focus more on selling its AI models to enterprise customers through application programming interfaces.
MiniMax, listed in Hong Kong, said its revenue in the first half of this year more than tripled from a year earlier to $116.6 million. Revenue from API sales and other enterprise services, which soared eight-fold to $73.9 million, accounted for 63.4% of its first-half revenue, compared with just 30.3% a year earlier. MiniMax’s loss for the first half narrowed to $358 million, from $402 million a year earlier.
Despite the rapid growth in its revenue from models, MiniMax faces fierce competition from other Chinese AI developers that are rolling out increasingly powerful new models. Rival Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, released last month, became a major hit by delivering frontier-level performance to challenge Anthropic and OpenAI. To keep up with Moonshot and other rivals, MiniMax is developing a new large-size flagship model known internally as M3 Pro, The Information [reported](https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/exclusive-chinas-minimax-plans-launch-2-7-trillion-parameter-model?rc=jnr9wn) last month.
In the AI video generation market, MiniMax’s H3 open-source video model, released in late July, is ranked third in the text-to-video category and second in the image-to-video category in Artificial Analysis’s [leaderboard](https://artificialanalysis.ai/video/leaderboard/text-to-video) for video models, making it a major competitor to industry leader ByteDance.
The bulk of MiniMax’s revenue now comes from enterprise customers paying for the company’s AI video model and large language models.
