SpaceX plans to compete with major US wireless carriers like Verizon and AT&T. The company [announced](https://www.spacex.com/updates#starlink-mobile-spectrum) on Thursday that it plans to acquire a nationwide portfolio of low-band wireless spectrum and that it had received approval from the Federal Communications Commission for a next-generation Starlink Mobile satellite constellation.
Elon Musk [wrote on X](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2108296168094544099) that the moves were “the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America.”
SpaceX said the spectrum deal will cover up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band, meaning that signal will be able to pass through walls and provide customers with service even when they are inside buildings, a key feature of competing with existing carriers. SpaceX plans to combine the spectrum with its existing setup.
The company did not reveal the cost of the deal and the acquisition still requires final approval from the FCC. SpaceX also plans to launch 15,000 next-generation satellites optimized for the new bandwidth. The company said the satellites will further improve connectivity.
