The branding discussions, which come as Cursor has been working on an ambitious new lineup of tools and models, sparked questions from staff. In a Q&A following the all-hands, some staff questioned the reasoning behind using Grok’s branding. Cursor CEO Michael Truell had told employees earlier this year that SpaceXAI viewed both Cursor’s brand and its enterprise customer relationships as valuable assets.
The final branding decisions could still evolve, and another option is to use a new brand name instead of SpaceXAI’s Grok brand, a person familiar with the discussions said.
Cursor and SpaceX in April announced a tech and computing partnership and as part of that agreement, SpaceX received the option to acquire Cursor. SpaceX announced soon after its June initial public offering that it would move ahead with the acquisition.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said this week, on SpaceX’s first earnings call as a public company, that the Cursor deal had moved through “almost all” of the regulatory hurdles and should close “quite soon.”
Cursor and SpaceX have been working closely together as a result of the partnership—the two companies agreed to develop AI models jointly, and Cursor got access to SpaceX’s AI servers—but the impact of the acquisition on Cursor products has been unclear.
Cursor gave some organizational updates to staff on Thursday, the people said, saying the company will not operate as a standalone unit within SpaceXAI, but will be spread across multiple existing SpaceXAI teams. Leaders also told Cursor employees they would be fully integrated into SpaceX Slack workspaces, reporting structures and other internal operations within days of the closing date, the people said. Cursor does not plan to make any of the changes until the deal is closed, one person said.
**Valuable Customers**
The all-stock acquisition is set to bring Musk’s SpaceX a base of enterprise AI customers and a trove of valuable training data. That could boost its AI efforts, as its Grok products have struggled to gain traction with business users. At the same time, it remains unclear how much of SpaceX’s future growth will come from developing and selling AI products versus renting out its extensive compute capacity to competitors.
SpaceX reported $2.6 billion in second-quarter AI revenue, boosted by major deals to sell its cloud capacity to other companies. But it burned $16 billion in cash in the quarter, due to $18.4 billion in capital expenditures, mostly related to data centers. That’s putting pressure on the company to show more revenue flowing from its AI business.
SpaceX said it expects revenue to hit a $100 billion annualized revenue rate by December, including Cursor revenue, though it noted that selling cloud services would be the biggest contributor to that target.
SpaceX, which crowdsources some of its earnings call questions from individual shareholders, said it had received several queries about the combined companies’ product road map. Musk declined to provide details, citing the need to avoid “gun jumping.” He was referring to antitrust rules that limit merging companies from coordinating or operating too closely before a deal closes.
Signs of the two companies’ collaboration have been evident for some time. Cursor and SpaceXAI released their first [jointly developed model](https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/exclusive-spacexai-plans-launch-new-model-cursor-soon-wednesday), Grok 4.5, last month. Some Cursor engineers have been working in SpaceXAI’s code base for months, and Elon Musk has met with leaders at the company in recent weeks to review Cursor products. Truell has also repeatedly met with engineers at SpaceXAI’s headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif.
At the same time, Cursor has targeted an ambitious push beyond its roots in coding-focused products. Truell told employees in May that Cursor planned to expand significantly in general-purpose AI development, including its product designed to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Cowork as well as with other industry-leading models. The company has also said it plans to release Cursor Origin, its GitHub rival, later this year.
