Samsung Electronics' Taylor foundry fab in Texas has reportedly reached full booking before 2nm volume production begins, signaling stronger demand for the company's incoming US advanced-node capacity as the site moves toward trial operations.

According to South Korea's Munhwa Ilbo , citing semiconductor industry sources, planned output at the fab has been fully booked by 2nm projects including Tesla's AI5 processor, Broadcom's next-generation communications chips and an Arm AI chip for smart devices. Samsung's 2nm yield is also estimated to have risen from around 60% early this year to the 80% range. Samsung has not publicly confirmed the booking level, yield figure or Arm project.
Taylor's initial capacity is estimated at around 50,000 wafers per month. Samsung dispatched personnel responsible for process technology, equipment and yield to the Texas site in June and began equipment installation in July. Trial operations could begin around late September or early October, ahead of volume production for major customers in 2027.
Samsung has publicly said Taylor Fab 1 is scheduled to begin operations in 2026 and that 2nm capacity will be expanded progressively after the site comes online.
The timing makes the reported booking notable. Samsung appears to be entering Taylor's ramp with several large customer programs already lined up, rather than bringing new advanced-node capacity online and waiting for utilization to build.
For Samsung Foundry, the significance is not that Taylor changes the competitive balance with TSMC overnight. It is that a growing pipeline of advanced-node design wins may be starting to translate into actual manufacturing demand.
Taylor moves toward production
Samsung's deployment of process, equipment and yield teams in June was followed by equipment installation beginning in July, bringing the fab closer to trial production.
A reported 50,000-wafer monthly starting capacity would give Samsung meaningful new advanced-node supply in the US, although the company has not publicly confirmed the figure. More important is whether the customer programs linked to Taylor move into volume production on schedule.
Samsung has also tied further expansion to customer demand. In July, the company said Taylor Fab 2 would begin construction by the end of 2026 with mass production targeted for 2030, while additional capacity would be developed in stages according to customer orders and discussions.
Preparations for Fab 2 are reportedly moving forward. Samsung has asked major equipment partners to obtain safety certifications in advance for tools expected to be installed at the second fab, while some suppliers are considering dispatching personnel to Texas for construction support.
US customers support Samsung's 2nm push
Samsung had already reported improving momentum at its foundry business ahead of the Taylor ramp.
Second-quarter foundry earnings improved significantly before incentive-related provisions, supported by strong US customer orders and HBM base-die demand. Design wins with major customers continued to expand, with 2nm high-performance computing engagements among the notable gains.
For the second half of 2026, Samsung plans to ramp new mobile products based on its second-generation 2nm process while expanding advanced-node and HPC design wins. The company is targeting double-digit foundry revenue growth amid rising demand from US and Chinese customers.
Tesla is one of the major programs already linked to Taylor.
Yonhap reported in July that Samsung had begun preparations to manufacture Tesla's AI5 after the chip completed tape-out, with production planned on Samsung's 2nm process in Taylor. The development expanded Samsung's relationship with Tesla beyond the US$16.5 billion logic-chip agreement announced in 2025, which had initially been associated mainly with Tesla's later AI6 generation.
Broadcom represents another major source of advanced-node demand.
Samsung and Broadcom in July announced expanded cooperation across memory, foundry manufacturing and advanced packaging, with the value of their collaboration expected to exceed US$200 billion through 2030. Broadcom's next-generation communications chips for high-speed data transfer are set to use Samsung's sub-2nm process technology.
Broadcom on September 2 also raised its forecast for AI chip revenue to around US$115 billion in fiscal 2027 and expects the figure to roughly double to US$230 billion in fiscal 2028.
Broadcom works with multiple manufacturing partners, but long-term commitments from a customer of its scale could help raise utilization at Samsung's advanced fabs as the company expands its external foundry business.
Yield remains the execution test
The other key question is whether Samsung can sustain its reported 2nm yield improvement as production scales.
Moving from roughly 60% early this year into the 80% range, if accurate and sustainable at volume, would strengthen Samsung's ability to convert customer design wins into commercially viable mass production.
Samsung does not disclose node-specific yield rates, and the reported 80% figure has not been independently confirmed.
Its public disclosures nevertheless point to broader progress, with 2nm HPC customer engagements expanding and second-generation 2nm production scheduled to ramp further in the second half.
Taylor will therefore test more than whether Samsung can attract customers. It will show whether the company can maintain yield, delivery performance and utilization as several large programs move toward volume manufacturing.
Taylor's US location gains strategic value
Taylor's role is also becoming more important as Washington puts greater emphasis on domestic semiconductor manufacturing.
South Korea and the US are discussing semiconductor investment as part of broader bilateral negotiations, while US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said Washington is preparing a "targeted, thoughtful tariff policy" for semiconductor imports and has emphasized domestic manufacturing as a condition for favorable access to the US market.
That policy backdrop increases the strategic value of Samsung's Texas footprint as customers consider supply security, tariff exposure and long-term access to leading-edge capacity.
If Taylor's reported bookings translate into sustained volume production, Samsung Foundry's recovery will increasingly be judged by whether it can keep the Texas fab loaded, maintain competitive yields and convert its first wave of major customer programs into repeat business.
