Memory makers tighten supply as DRAM price rally extends into 2027

As memory vendors continue signing long-term agreements (LTAs), the supply-demand imbalance is set to worsen in 2027. Gerry Chen, general manager of Team Group, revealed that module makers have recently received "friendly notices" from upstream memory manufacturers. These notices explicitly state that shipment allocations will be drastically cut in 2027, creating a massive supply gap for DRAM. Upstream manufacturers have reportedly sold out nearly all of their capacity for 2027 through 2028.
Chen pointed out that given the severe supply scarcity, there is zero risk of memory prices dropping. While the pace of price increases is expected to moderate slightly from Q4 2026 into 2027, prices will continue to climb quarter-by-quarter at a steady rate of 20% to 30%.
Industry sources among memory module makers also noted that DRAM supply will tighten further starting in Q3 2026. DDR5 supply, in particular, is projected to fall below 80% of original expectations, whereas NAND supply remains relatively stable. Furthermore, several module makers received notices indicating that their 2027 supply allocation might be slashed to half or even less of their 2026 levels.
Despite the ongoing structural deficit in DRAM supply, some market research firms project that DRAM price hikes will ease into single-digit percentages. However, industry insiders privately argue that quarterly increases will almost certainly remain in double digits.
Chen emphasized that this memory cycle differs fundamentally from past short-term cycles. Driven by AI server and data center clients entering into LTAs and sweeping up capacity directly from upstream vendors, wafer fab inventories are low: chips are being shipped out almost immediately as they roll off the production line.
The core issue in the memory market is no longer just high prices, but the fact that new fab expansions cannot keep pace with demand. According to Chen, for instance, Micron's MegaFab under construction in the US will not bring its first production line online until the fourth quarter of 2027 at the earliest. Yet, even before this new capacity comes online, orders for 2028 through 2029 have already been fully booked, offering virtually no relief to the immediate supply crunch.
High prices won't stop further hikes; shortages to worsen in H1 2027
Recently, Kioxia CEO Hiroo Ota offered a rare cooling signal, commenting that NAND prices have "already risen enough."
Offering his perspective, Chen suggested that Japanese business culture avoids overly direct language. In reality, Ota's statement implies: "We know prices are high, but our hands are tied." While vendors acknowledge customer complaints regarding soaring costs, this does not mean prices will stop rising—it simply highlights their lack of control over the market squeeze.
Chen explained that the AI infrastructure boom remains in a phase of aggressive compute expansion. The "brains" driving AI computations have an urgent need for tokens and memory bandwidth, which is exacerbating the DRAM deficit. In contrast, NAND demand growth lags behind that of DRAM, making DRAM demand significantly stronger than NAND. DRAM products account for 75% to 80% of Team Group's product mix.
Following severe shortages in 2026, the market deficit will become even more acute in the first half of 2027. Even clients holding LTAs are not guaranteed fixed pricing, as actual delivery prices will still adjust according to prevailing market conditions.
Facing upstream supply constraints and elevated procurement costs, Chen conceded that as total supply contracts in 2027, Team Group must prioritize long-standing clients. While overall revenue and profitability might be affected, the company is seeing increased engagement from server and enterprise-level clients, which should help protect full-year profitability. With prices hovering at historic highs, there is virtually no risk of operating at a loss.
Because traditional consumer PCs can no longer absorb these high costs, consumer demand has been noticeably suppressed. By contrast, the server and edge-computing sectors remain capable of digesting premium quotes, with price premiums reaching as high as 40% to 50%.
Non-consumer operations currently account for 65% to 70% of Team Group's revenue. Moving forward, the company will strategically direct its limited allocations toward high-margin enterprise clients with long-term loyalty, ensuring robust profit momentum throughout this supply-constrained cycle.
