China GPU race, Part 1: Enflame IPO spotlights Tencent ties, deep losses and AI chip ambitions

Enflame Technology is preparing to become the latest of China's leading AI chip developers to tap public markets, with a CNY6 billion (approx. US$893 million) Shanghai STAR Market listing that puts its rapid revenue growth, persistent losses and heavy reliance on Tencent under closer scrutiny.

The Shanghai-based chipmaker will open subscriptions on September 2 for 43.04 million new shares, equal to 10% of its enlarged share capital of about 430 million shares, according to Reuters . Preliminary price consultation begins on August 28. The proceeds will mainly fund fifth- and sixth-generation AI chips and advanced software-hardware co-development projects.
Founded in 2018, Enflame is commonly grouped with Moore Threads, MetaX and Biren Technology as China's "four little GPU dragons". The other three have already gone public, leaving Enflame as the last of the group to reach the capital market.
Unlike its peers, however, Enflame is not pursuing a conventional GPGPU route.
A different route from Nvidia
Moore Threads, MetaX and Biren have built general-purpose GPU platforms that seek varying degrees of compatibility with the CUDA ecosystem associated with Nvidia. Enflame instead uses a domain-specific architecture, or DSA, optimised for cloud AI training and inference.
Its platform is built around the proprietary GCU-CARE computing unit and GCU-LARE high-speed interconnect, supported by the TopsRider software stack. The architecture does not support CUDA.
That gives Enflame a clear technical trade-off. DSA designs can be tuned closely to AI workloads and offer strong energy efficiency, particularly in inference and data-centre deployments. But customers that have already built models and software around Nvidia's ecosystem face higher migration costs.
Enflame says its fourth-generation L600, also known as Suisi 400 , delivers compute performance above Nvidia's H20. The company has developed four generations of architecture and five cloud AI chips.
Revenue surges, but losses remain
Commercial growth has accelerated sharply. Revenue climbed from CNY301 million in 2023 to CNY722 million in 2024 and CNY990 million (see table below) in 2025, representing a compound annual growth rate of 81.32%.
First-half 2026 revenue reached CNY1.12 billion, up 279.08% year on year, while revenue for the first three quarters is projected at CNY2.3 billion to CNY3 billion.
Yet Enflame remains operating at a loss.
Net losses attributable to the parent narrowed from CNY1.67 billion in 2023 to CNY1.51 billion in 2024 and CNY1.164 billion in 2025. The company expects a first-half 2026 net loss of CNY632 million.
R&D remains the largest burden. Research expenditure was equivalent to 408.01% of revenue in 2023, 181.66% in 2024 and 114.63% in 2025.
Enflame says stronger revenue and gross profit could allow it to reach consolidated profitability in 2026 or 2027.
Its profitability still trails several domestic peers. Enflame's core-business gross margin reached 31.78% in 2025, up from 22.60% in 2023, but remained below the 57.87% average for a peer group including Cambricon, Moore Threads, MetaX, Biren and Iluvatar CoreX.
According to Guancha.cn , Enflame attributes the gap partly to its stage of product iteration and volume deployment, alongside differences in product mix, project structure and business models.

Tencent's involvement is both strength and risk
Tencent sits at the center of Enflame's commercial story. The internet group owns 20.46% of the chipmaker and was also its largest customer in 2025, contributing CNY768 million, or 74.9% of annual revenue. Enflame's five largest customers together accounted for 96.89% of sales.
That concentration demonstrates that Enflame has progressed beyond laboratory validation into large-scale deployment with a major internet customer.
It also creates exposure.
Any change in Tencent's procurement cycle, product roadmap, or supplier strategy could have a material effect on Enflame's short-term performance.
Enflame sold about 66,000 AI accelerator cards and modules in 2025, equal to roughly 1.7% of China's AI accelerator market, where total shipments reached about 4 million units.
Nvidia still held about 55% of the Chinese AI accelerator market in 2025, according to IDC data cited in Enflame's prospectus.
That leaves substantial room for domestic suppliers, but also illustrates the scale gap they still face.
The IPO is only one part of the contest
Enflame's listing comes while China's onshore technology IPO market is enjoying its strongest momentum in years, supported by Beijing's effort to strengthen domestic semiconductor and AI capabilities.
Yet public-market enthusiasm does not remove the underlying commercial questions. Revenue growth, customer diversification, software compatibility, cluster deployment and profitability will increasingly matter as investors distinguish between technology promise and sustainable scale.
Those questions extend well beyond Enflame.
The second part of this series examines how Enflame, Moore Threads, MetaX and Biren are taking different routes through China's GPU race, from DSA and CUDA compatibility to HBM, high-speed interconnects and 10,000-card AI clusters.
