Lam Research

Lam Research is grooming Indian companies to become its suppliers rather than relying only on its global vendor base, a senior executive said, as the US chip equipment maker deepens its presence in a market where the government now ties incentives to local sourcing.

"We are developing India-based suppliers; we are not trying only to bring our global suppliers here," Rangesh Raghavan, corporate vice president and general manager for Lam Research India, told ETElectronicsWorld . He said the company is "building labs, factories, and putting requirements on our customers and suppliers," but did not go into specifics.
A silicon component plant as the anchor
The remarks follow Lam's plan, announced at SEMICON India 2026 in September, to invest approximately INR100 billion (US$1.05 billion) in establishing its first silicon component manufacturing facility in India. Sesha Varadarajan, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Lam Research, said the facility will support a vertically integrated process spanning silicon ingot production and processing, and will also serve as a manufacturing and export base for the company's global operations, according to Swarajya .
Policy now points the same way. Under India's Semicon 2.0 program, which carries an incentive outlay of INR1.27 trillion, applicants in the machines and materials pillar can receive production-linked incentives for sourcing components and sub-assemblies produced in India.
Equipment rivals scale up too
Lam is not the only toolmaker expanding in the country. At the same event, Applied Materials unveiled an India Vision 2035 plan that includes a US$5 billion investment over the next decade, a 140-acre research park, a 10x expansion of its India supply-chain capacity, and a doubling of its R&D workforce by 2035, Swarajya reported.
Raghavan said "a fab is the core of everything," with materials, equipment, gases, chemistry, recycling, and logistics forming the supply chain around it. India's first commercial 12-inch fab, a Tata Electronics project with PSMC in Dholera, is still under construction, according to a JM Financial report cited by The Financial Express . The brokerage said the Dholera fab will need support from more than 400 suppliers that will eventually have to be based close to the plant, and estimated capital equipment requirements for projects approved under the first phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) alone at US$12-13 billion.
Lam is also investing in talent. Raghavan said its Semiverse virtual fab training platform, launched with ISM, is now used at more than 100 universities and is likely to reach its goal of training 60,000 students two to three years ahead of schedule.
