Largan chairman and CEO Adam Lin said October 2026 orders are tracking at roughly the same level as September's, but will begin declining in November as customers cut their forecasts after new phones went on sale. The comments signal that demand across the smartphone supply chain will weaken in the fourth quarter of 2026, creating challenges for handset chipmakers and other suppliers that performed strongly during the third quarter.
Peak season arrives early
Lin said at the company's June shareholders' meeting that customers' new-phone order schedules differed from those of previous years, with the fourth quarter expected to carry the heaviest load of the year. However, customers have already lowered their forecasts just as October began, meaning the anticipated fourth-quarter demand adjustment has arrived early.
Although Largan did not identify the customer involved, the market widely believes the situation is related to Apple's iPhone. Investors have begun reassessing the actual sales momentum of the latest iPhone models. If the iPhone, which has delivered the most stable sales momentum in recent years, is struggling, Android devices are unlikely to perform much better.
Warning signs already in place
The smartphone market was already facing pressure from higher memory prices in 2026. Several market research firms forecast a near-double-digit percentage decline in full-year smartphone shipments. At its most recent earnings call, MediaTek also maintained its outlook for an approximately 15% decline in full-year smartphone shipments. The company forecast that smartphone-business revenue in the third quarter would be flat to down by a mid-single-digit percentage from the second quarter, with growth in its smart-device platform expected to support overall operations.
These warning signs had already tempered expectations for smartphone demand in 2026.
MediaTek's assessment of fourth-quarter shipment momentum for its new smartphone SoCs will not be known until its next earnings call. However, based on Largan's market observations, actual shipment performance could face some constraints.
DDI momentum under pressure
In addition to smartphone SoC suppliers, Taiwanese display-driver IC (DDI) makers benefited from new-phone inventory buildup during the third quarter. Novatek Microelectronics delivered results at the upper end of its guidance, with small- and medium-sized DDIs serving as the main growth driver. That momentum came from US smartphone customers entering their peak inventory-building season, as well as the accelerated adoption of OLED touch and display driver integration (TDDI) in foldable phones. If major US smartphone customers moderate orders in the fourth quarter, while Android demand also remains less than robust, sustaining growth in small- and medium-sized DDIs will present a significant challenge.
