Europe's drive for sovereign AI faces a new test as German search engine Ecosia abandons France's Mistral AI models in favor of open-source AI, including models from China. Ecosia CEO Christian Kroll said Mistral's models performed poorly and frequently overloaded its servers, while the company's new approach has cut costs in half and improved quality and performance.

Ecosia replaced OpenAI GPT models with Mistral AI models in May 2026. It later partnered with European AI platform Melious to adopt open-weight models from Alibaba Group, Z.ai, and Moonshot AI, including Qwen, GLM, and Kimi.
Kroll told Politico that Mistral AI's models lagged competitors by about one year and that its servers were often overloaded.
He believes Europe missed the first wave of generative AI development and does not need to spend tens of billions of dollars training frontier models from scratch. Ready-made open-weight models can also help European companies improve their competitiveness, he said.
In response, Mistral co-founder and chief scientist Guillaume Lample urged Ecosia to test the company's new models as soon as possible, saying Mistral AI could immediately provide an early version.
Mistral AI recently unveiled its latest model, Mistral Large 4, internally code-named "Le Chonk." The company describes it as the most powerful open-weight model outside China.
According to Reuters and WIRED , Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch said at the launch event that Mistral Large 4 outperformed Chinese models in benchmarks including cybersecurity. Europe can compete with China and the US in the AI race, he said.
Lample said open-weight models give customers control over the technology and allow them to customize it to their needs. Companies that rely on closed-source models to defend against cyberthreats could see their defenses fail if a supplier stops providing the service, he said.
