Enflame enters public markets with Nvidia alternatives in its sights

Chinese AI chipmaker Enflame Technology made a striking debut on Shanghai's STAR Market on Friday, with its shares opening 188% above the IPO price after raising CNY6.12 billion (US$912 million). The listing gives the Tencent-backed company fresh capital to fund its next generations of AI processors and large-scale computing systems, while sharpening attention on China's effort to build alternatives to Nvidia.

Enflame priced 43.04 million shares, equivalent to 10% of its enlarged share capital, at CNY142.18 each. The stock opened at CNY410 and rose as high as CNY475 before easing to about CNY430, lifting its market value to roughly CNY185 billion, more than three times its valuation at the offer price. ICsmart described Enflame as the last of Shanghai's "four little AI-chip dragons" to reach the capital market, alongside MetaX, Biren Technology, and Iluvatar CoreX.
Reuters uses a slightly different grouping under the "four little GPU dragons" label, placing Enflame alongside Moore Threads, MetaX and Biren. The broader significance is the same: Chinese AI accelerator developers are increasingly turning to public markets for capital while US restrictions on advanced chips continue to strengthen demand for domestic computing alternatives.
Enflame bets on DSA rather than general-purpose GPUs
Founded in 2018, Enflame has focused on cloud AI processors built around a domain-specific architecture (DSA), rather than following the general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) approach used by Nvidia and many rivals.
Chairman Zhao Lidong said Enflame's approach is designed to optimize hardware around specific algorithms and workloads, embedding key computing, communications, and memory characteristics directly into the architecture. The company argues that this can improve operating efficiency and price-performance for targeted AI applications.
The strategy also gives Enflame a more differentiated path in an increasingly crowded Chinese accelerator market. Zhao has said following established GPU architectures too closely could bring short-term benefits but would ultimately constrain long-term technological independence.
Tencent anchors commercialization, but concentration remains high
Enflame has developed four generations of architecture, with cumulative shipments of its third-generation products reaching 160,000 units. The company has maintained a seven-year strategic relationship with Tencent, which has made repeat purchases of its products.
That relationship has been central to Enflame's commercial expansion, but it also exposes the company to substantial customer concentration. Tencent remained Enflame's largest shareholder after the IPO with a 17.95% stake and was also its largest customer before the listing. Sales linked to Tencent represented 83.79% of Enflame's 2025 revenue, according to the company's prospectus cited by Reuters.
Revenue rose 37% in 2025 to CNY990.2 million, while the company's net loss narrowed to CNY1.16 billion from CNY1.51 billion a year earlier. Enflame expects revenue of CNY2.3 billion to CNY3 billion for the first nine months of 2026, with a net loss of CNY700 million to CNY860 million.
IPO proceeds target fifth- and sixth-generation AI chips
Enflame plans to direct most of the IPO proceeds towards fifth- and sixth-generation AI processors, related software and large-scale computing systems. The investment will determine whether the company can translate its architectural differentiation and early deployment scale into a broader commercial position beyond Tencent.
The company expects to reach break-even or profitability in 2026 or 2027, depending on revenue growth and margins.
Zhao said China's domestic AI chip market is expanding rapidly while local supply-chain capabilities continue to improve. Enflame expects advances in domestic manufacturing, yield and component availability to strengthen the ecosystem over the coming years.
Shanghai-backed investment groups, including Shanghai S&T Venture Capital, Shanghai International Group, and Shanghai State-Owned Capital Investment, have also supported Enflame through financing and supply-chain connections during its development.
For Enflame, the STAR Market listing marks more than a financing event. The next test is whether its DSA strategy, large Tencent deployment base, and new capital can support a transition from a heavily concentrated domestic supplier into a more scalable contender in China's rapidly expanding AI accelerator market.
