Europe and US IDM grid-to-core push challenges Taiwan power modules

Data-center power systems are entering a new phase as operators move toward 800V HVDC and denser DC-DC architectures, raising demand for high-voltage, low-loss, and high-frequency power devices. The shift is pushing suppliers toward integrated control, protection, and module solutions, while Taiwan manufacturers weigh how quickly they can adapt.
Integration becomes the new competitive line
Industry sources said the focus is no longer limited to improving individual components, but to combining high-density packaging, thermal design, and module integration. That change is expected to reshape competition in AI power infrastructure, where efficiency, heat dissipation, and reliability are increasingly tied to system-level design rather than standalone devices.
Global suppliers including Infineon, STMicroelectronics, and Onsemi are advancing a cross-voltage "Grid to Core" strategy that spans power conversion, control, protection, and power module integration. Analysts said the approach reflects a broader effort to capture more value across the power-delivery chain as AI workloads drive up current demand at the chip level.
The move is also boosting demand for silicon carbide, or SiC, and gallium nitride, or GaN, which are better suited to high-efficiency, high-frequency applications. Peter Chou, senior industry analyst at the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute under III, said global vendors are strengthening competitiveness by optimizing device performance and expanding into modules, drivers, protection, and complete power-delivery solutions, while also pursuing acquisitions and partnerships with system companies.
Chou said the industry is also moving toward native multiphase power architectures, higher power density, and more integrated power-management components as AI infrastructure grows more demanding. As chip power rails require more current, DrMOS, SPS, and multiphase power modules are being pushed toward deeper integration. At the same time, vertical power delivery is being introduced gradually to shorten the low-voltage, high-current path and reduce power loss.
Taiwan suppliers face an upgrade challenge
For Taiwan's power device industry, the opportunity is clear, but so is the gap. Local companies still rely heavily on rectifiers and low- to medium-voltage silicon MOSFETs, with limited deployment in SiC and GaN. However, they already have a base in power supplies, motor drives, and system integration, which could help them move into AI-related applications if they upgrade capabilities in high-density packaging, low parasitics, thermal management, and reliability.
Supply-chain sources said most local firms remain focused on single-device production, but the next trend is modularization, as AI customers increasingly prefer smaller form factors and higher efficiency. System makers are also leaning toward modular products, making integration and heat dissipation more important than ever.
Infineon's vertical power delivery roadmap is expected to reach commercialization and mass production in 2027, according to supply-chain sources. That timeline underscores how quickly the AI power market is evolving, and how much pressure suppliers face to build end-to-end offerings rather than compete only on discrete parts.
The changing landscape is already visible in company results. Taiwan power device maker Eris Technology reported self-assessed consolidated revenue of NT$300 million (approx. US$9.52 million) in August 2026, up 31.51% year over year, and above NT$300 million for the first time in a single month. Cumulative consolidated revenue from January through August 2026 reached NT$2.076 billion, up 20.67% from the same period in 2025.
Eris said supply-chain restructuring has become more apparent since 2026, helping drive new orders and project contributions. The company said related business revenue has increased month by month, with some products already posting multiple-fold growth from the start of the year, making the segment one of its main growth drivers this year.
