Synopsys has reported a 22% reduction in die area for a neural processing unit (NPU) implemented with its Fusion Compiler design tool on Samsung Foundry's SF2P process, providing a concrete design-level result as Samsung seeks to turn its 2nm technology into more commercial foundry business.
Synopsys Chief Product Development Officer Shankar Krishnamoorthy presented the result at Synopsys Converge Korea 2026 in Seoul on September 8, according to ZDNet Korea . Synopsys attributed the improvement to design-technology co-optimization (DTCO) work with Samsung Foundry incorporated into Fusion Compiler.
Data presented at the event showed the NPU die area was 22% smaller than in the previous implementation. The baseline was not disclosed, leaving it unclear whether the comparison involved a different process, design flow or optimization approach.
A smaller die can potentially increase the number of chips produced from each wafer and improve manufacturing economics, although actual unit costs also depend on yield, wafer pricing and other production factors. The result demonstrates design-level optimization on SF2P but does not establish Samsung's manufacturing yield or the broader maturity of the process.
2nm ecosystem moves toward commercialization
The development comes as Samsung works to expand advanced-node orders and strengthen its position in a foundry market dominated by TSMC.
Samsung's Foundry Business reported significantly improved earnings before incentive-related provisions in the second quarter of 2026, supported by HBM base-die demand and strong US customer orders. Design wins with major customers also expanded, including 2nm high-performance computing engagements.
For the second half of 2026, Samsung plans to ramp new mobile products using its second-generation 2nm process while pursuing further AI and HPC design wins. The company is targeting double-digit foundry revenue growth during the period.
The latest NPU result builds on design-enablement work Synopsys and Samsung announced earlier this year rather than representing an isolated demonstration.
At Samsung's SAFE Forum in May, Synopsys unveiled production-ready digital and analog design flows for Samsung Foundry's second- and third-generation 2nm-class processes. Their DTCO work spans synthesis, layout and signoff, targeting improvements in power, performance and area.
Synopsys has also expanded its portfolio of interface IP optimized for Samsung processes, including UCIe, PCIe 7.0, 112G and 224G interfaces and LPDDR6, addressing the increasingly complex connectivity requirements of HPC and multi-die designs.
The design ecosystem is becoming more important as Samsung attracts larger advanced-node customers.
Samsung and Broadcom in July signed a memorandum of understanding to expand cooperation across memory, foundry and advanced packaging, with the companies estimating more than US$200 billion in collaboration over the five years through 2030.
Their foundry cooperation covers Samsung's 2nm and below process technologies for Broadcom products, including wireless broadband communications chips. The partnership also extends to advanced packaging technologies based on Samsung's 2nm platform and next-generation HBM.
Samsung has separately been pursuing additional advanced-node orders as it seeks to raise utilization at its leading-edge fabs and narrow the foundry gap with TSMC.
Synopsys broadens Korea business beyond memory
Synopsys is meanwhile expanding its South Korean business beyond a customer base historically concentrated around memory chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
The company continues to work with Samsung Foundry on advanced-process infrastructure and with Samsung System LSI on Exynos mobile processor projects. It is also extending its design and multiphysics capabilities to Korean chip developers including Rebellions and FuriosaAI as it seeks a larger role in the country's non-memory semiconductor sector.
The expansion comes as Synopsys integrates simulation and analysis capabilities following its acquisition of Ansys in July 2025, broadening its traditional EDA business toward a silicon-to-systems engineering model.
The companies are also extending their collaboration into advanced packaging. Synopsys' 3DIC Compiler combines planning, implementation and multiphysics analysis for multi-die designs, while Synopsys and Samsung are validating the platform on a 3D test chip using Samsung's hybrid copper bonding technology.
Such integration is becoming increasingly important for HPC systems, where chip design, HBM, thermal behavior, power delivery and advanced packaging must be optimized together rather than treated as separate development stages.
For Samsung, the 22% NPU area reduction is not evidence of SF2P yield or manufacturing competitiveness on its own. Its significance lies in showing progress in the design infrastructure needed to move customers onto Samsung's advanced nodes as the foundry seeks to convert growing 2nm engagements into production business.
