Sivers Semiconductors positions laser arrays as solution to copper's limits

At this year's China International Optoelectronic Expo (CIOE), Sivers Semiconductor brought two products to its booth that trace the trajectory of the optical networking industry: a 1.6T pluggable optical transceiver currently ramping toward mainstream adoption, and a prototype module built for external light source (ELS) architectures, a technology that could define the next generation of data center interconnects.
"This is the really hot one in the market," said a company representative while pointing to the 1.6T module. The transceiver is a traditional pluggable design containing Sivers' laser technology and is said to already be shipping.
Meanwhile, the ELS prototype developed in partnership with optical components maker O-Net remains in development. The ELS module integrates an array of eight lasers on a single chip.
This design shrinks the light source's footprint and supports architectures that position the optical engine closer to the ASIC, a configuration increasingly favored for next-generation data center systems. Sivers supplies the laser arrays, while O-Net designs the module around them.
The shift toward laser arrays, and photonics broadly, is a response to the physical ceiling on copper interconnects. As data transmission pushes beyond 800G, copper interconnects run into issues with heat and signal loss. With AI factories expanding beyond the single rack to span rack groups, rows, and different sites, optics is becoming increasingly important as a higher-bandwidth, lower-power transmission medium.
From research roots to photonics supplier
Sivers' laser expertise traces back 25 years to a research and development operation in Glasgow, Scotland, historically focused on government and custom lab projects rather than volume manufacturing. That changed roughly two years ago, when its new CEO, Vickram Vathulya, joined the company and moved to reposition Sivers as a mass-production supplier for the booming photonics market within the past year.
The company has already begun leaning on its existing Glasgow production line and workforce and recently announced an additional US$30 million investment there to expand manufacturing capacity for indium phosphide (InP)-based distributed feedback (DFB) lasers currently in demand by the optical market serving AI data centers. The expansion is expected to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2027.
China was said to play a large role in the company's global expansion. Sivers opened a China office this year and is attending CIOE for the first time to gauge market interest. A representative noted that roughly half of the company's target pluggable market lies in China, and six of the top ten optical module customers globally are Chinese firms. This was said to reflect the country's manufacturing scale, cost efficiency, and volume capacity.
Despite strong demand, supply is not guaranteed to keep pace. The company pointed to a bottleneck in specialized manufacturing equipment as a key constraint on capacity. Specifically, a single type of machine is in short supply industry-wide, although it declined to name the equipment in question.
Meanwhile, a representative said that customer demand is growing by at least 30% year-over-year and, citing financial disclosures by optical products maker Lumentum, suggested that even planned capacity expansions across the industry would not be sufficient to meet projected demand in 2027 and 2028.
Looking ahead, Sivers is positioning its laser arrays for co-packaged optics (CPO), and the representative said that the company is currently alone in supplying this technology at scale. While the company was built on decades of government-funded or lab work, its capacity expansion plans and presence at the expo indicate the growing pull of the AI data center market.
