Renesas trims chip portfolio to focus on AI servers and EVs

Renesas Electronics has completed the sale of its timing device business to US fabless semiconductor specialist SiTime, tightening its portfolio around AI servers, electric vehicles, embedded computing and software-led chip design.
The Japanese chipmaker said on July 1 that the transaction, first approved on February 5, had closed, with a gain of JPY443.3 billion (approx. US$2.74 billion) to be booked in its fiscal 2026 third-quarter financial statements . The business came from Renesas' 2019 acquisition of US chipmaker Integrated Device Technology (IDT), Nikkei reported.
Renesas sharpens AI server and EV focus
The sale marks another step in Renesas' effort to prune non-core assets and redirect capital to higher-priority markets, including AI server power, EV chips, microcontrollers, system-on-chip products, and embedded computing.
Renesas said the proceeds will support shareholder returns and investment in strategic technologies and equipment. The company will also retain a link to the business through SiTime shares, giving both companies room to cooperate across commercial and defense markets.
The timing device unit generated about JPY30.4 billion in revenue in 2024. Its products include clock generators, clock buffers, network synchronizers, and jitter attenuators for wireless infrastructure, AI and data centers, and industrial equipment, according to EET Japan .
SiTime gains scale in precision timing chips
For SiTime, the acquisition adds a high-reliability product portfolio used in platforms that require precise synchronization, from AI servers and high-performance GPUs to autonomous systems, data centers, and weapons guidance equipment.
SiTime CEO Rajesh Vashist said the company sees strong demand for timing components in AI, autonomous driving, and defense. He said high-quality timing chips for GPUs, AI servers, data centers, and advanced military systems could lift SiTime's 2026 revenue by 80% from 2025, even before acquisition-related revenue is included.
SiTime also said the deal would accelerate its path toward US$1 billion in revenue, expand its clock product portfolio tenfold, and strengthen its position in the AI data center market. About 163 Renesas employees, including timing product specialists and field application engineers, will join SiTime. The company said it does not plan to discontinue or stop selling acquired products.
MEMS partnership keeps Renesas connected
Renesas and SiTime have also signed a memorandum of understanding to explore integrating SiTime's MEMS resonators into Renesas microcontrollers and SoCs.
Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata said the timing business has strong potential in MEMS and would be better positioned to grow under SiTime. He added that the transaction is an important milestone, but cooperation with SiTime is "only just beginning," with both companies set to study timing integration for next-generation intelligent devices.
Portfolio reset moves beyond M&A
The deal fits a wider reshaping of Renesas' business mix. The company expanded for years through acquisitions, including Intersil in 2017, IDT in 2019 and Dialog Semiconductor in 2021. It has since become more selective, using divestments and partnerships to sharpen its growth priorities.
Renesas agreed to receive US$1.5 billion in cash and 4.13 million SiTime common shares under the deal, Nikkan reported. The company has also sold its radio-frequency component business to a Murugappa Group-affiliated company in India, reviewed parts of its power semiconductor investment plans and booked impairment losses tied to US power chipmaker Wolfspeed's financial difficulties.
The latest sale underscores a clearer strategic line: Renesas is moving away from scale for scale's sake and toward a tighter mix of AI server, EV, embedded and software-linked chip businesses.
