LG's robot actuator push turns appliance know-how into a physical AI supply-chain bet

As humanoid robots increasingly move from demonstrations toward factories and commercial deployments, competition is expanding beyond finished robots into the components that determine their cost, weight and ability to move precisely.

LG Electronics is positioning itself squarely in that emerging supply chain.
The South Korean electronics giant is in discussions with several global technology companies over supplying robot actuators, according to Baek Seung-tae, head of LG Electronics' Home Appliance Solution business, speaking at IFA 2026 in Berlin. Meetings are scheduled for October to discuss production readiness and other technical details.
Actuators combine motors, reducers and drivers to generate and control robotic movement, effectively functioning as a robot's joints and muscles. Industry estimates cited by LG put them at as much as 60%–70% of a humanoid robot's cost, making them one of the largest targets for cost reduction as manufacturers pursue mass production.
For LG, however, entering the actuator market represents something broader: an attempt to convert technologies accumulated through six decades of appliance manufacturing into a new B2B growth engine.
Appliances provide an unlikely robotics advantage
LG introduced its AXIUM actuator brand earlier this year and currently offers nine models. Baek said LG's motor technology enables motors that are more than 30% lighter than competing products, while the company plans to customize actuators around customers' differing requirements for size, output, precision and operating environments.
The strategy exposes an increasingly important dynamic in physical AI. As robotics commercialization accelerates, technologies developed for established industries—from motors and batteries to sensors and manufacturing—are becoming building blocks for humanoids.
LG has already completed an actuator pilot line at its Changwon plant and begun producing initial units to verify manufacturability and quality. The company previously said it was collaborating with Korean, European and North American startups and major robotics companies, with an ambition for actuators to make a meaningful contribution to group performance by around 2030.
LG's broader B2B strategy reinforces the incentive. B2B currently contributes slightly more than 10% of its home-appliance division's revenue, while the company is seeking to expand beyond consumer appliances into commercial and industrial applications.
LG builds an ecosystem rather than a robot alone
The actuator push is also increasingly intertwined with LG's broader physical AI strategy.
LG Group recently expanded its collaboration with Nvidia, with plans to unveil a bipedal humanoid based on Nvidia's Isaac GR00T robot foundation model in the first quarter of 2027. LG Electronics will provide actuators, LG Innotek sensors and LG Energy Solution batteries, while Nvidia contributes Jetson Thor computing and robotics software.
LG is simultaneously preparing its factories as testing grounds. Its CLOiD robot is being introduced at its Tennessee washing-machine facility, while Changwon is another planned deployment site. The resulting operational data can feed robot training and foundation-model development before LG attempts the more unpredictable home environment.
That creates an unusual closed loop: LG can manufacture robot components, integrate them into robots, deploy those robots inside its factories and use the resulting data to improve the system.
Chinese robotics suppliers remain formidable competitors, particularly as their scale places persistent pressure on component costs. LG itself has acknowledged that commercial success and monetization remain unproven.
Yet the company's advantage may not depend on becoming the world's leading humanoid brand.
If humanoid production expands as expected, supplying the joints and muscles behind multiple robot platforms could prove just as strategically valuable as building the robots themselves.
