Chinese GPU developer Biren Technology has teamed up with Shanghai University to establish an Integrated Circuit Intelligent Chip Joint Laboratory, expanding their cooperation into joint research on AI-chip optical interconnects and advanced thermal management.

The agreement was signed on September 2 at Shanghai University's Yanchang campus. The two sides plan to use the laboratory to pursue research projects at national and local levels while building a longer-term industry-academia collaboration framework spanning research, engineering, and talent development.
According to Chinese media outlets, the laboratory marks the latest stage in a partnership that has developed steadily since 2022. Biren and Shanghai University first worked together on cloud-based courses, followed by industry-education initiatives in 2023 and the establishment of an "AI + Integrated Circuits" education innovation center in 2024.
Optical interconnects and thermal management move to the forefront
The technical agenda now extends into more advanced areas. In 2025, the two sides began joint research through a project under China's National Key R&D Program focused on chip-to-chip optical networking technology for scalable multi-node computing chips.
Under the new laboratory, Biren and Shanghai University will concentrate on optical interconnect technologies for AI chips and new thermal-management approaches, while jointly applying for additional government-backed research projects. The collaboration will also draw on expertise across microelectronics, computer science, and communications.
Biren develops general-purpose computing architectures and GPUs for AI workloads. Its BILI product series has been deployed by major internet companies, large AI model developers, national AI computing platforms, AI data centers, telecom operators, and enterprise and government customers, with installations across multiple intelligent-computing clusters in China. The company listed in Hong Kong on January 2, 2026.
Biren broadens its university pipeline for domestic GPU development
The partnership also has a talent-development component. Biren and Shanghai University plan to establish specialized engineering master's and doctoral programs, along with customized programs for graduating students, aimed at training engineers for the integrated-circuit industry.
Biren Strategic Technology Committee chairman Li Xinrong said the company wants more Shanghai University students to gain exposure to domestic GPU technologies and participate in building China's computing ecosystem. Shanghai University party secretary Wu Jianyong said the university would provide laboratory space and research facilities while encouraging closer collaboration among its microelectronics, computing, and communications disciplines.
The new laboratory therefore extends a collaboration that has progressed from teaching and talent training into joint technology development, with AI-chip optical interconnects and cooling technologies now forming its core research priorities.
