Micron Technology on October 15 opened Micron Advanced Assembly and Test Taiwan 2 (AATT2) in Taichung, its second advanced assembly and test facility in Taiwan. The plant expands the company's packaging and testing capacity for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) as AI demand grows.
President Lai Ching-te attended the opening ceremony with Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin and other government officials.
Micron was represented by president and chief operating officer Manish Bhatia and Donghui Lu, head of Micron Taiwan. Customers and partners at the ceremony included ASUS, MSI, MediaTek, Global Unichip (GUC), ADATA, World Peace Industrial and WT Microelectronics.
Supply expected to stay tight through 2028
The new plant comes as HBM demand stays strong. In its latest earnings report, Micron said it expects supply and demand for memory and storage to be much tighter in fiscal 2027 and 2028 than in 2026. It has completed agreements covering the vast majority of its HBM bit supply for calendar 2027. It also expects industry HBM bit shipments to grow faster than conventional DRAM through calendar 2028.
Micron is expanding advanced memory and packaging capacity elsewhere as well. Its HBM advanced packaging facility in Singapore is expected to begin initial output in early calendar 2027.
Taiwan's role
Micron has operated in Taiwan for more than 30 years. Its work there covers product development, advanced memory process technology, and advanced packaging and testing. The company said Taiwan's talent base, supplier ecosystem and manufacturing expertise make the island central to its plans in advanced memory and AI, and that its continued investment reflects confidence in Taiwan's strategic importance.
