Micron is overhauling how it pays employees, promising quarterly profit-sharing bonuses and better pay and benefits for its Taiwan staff. The changes follow a labor dispute with the company's unions in Taiwan.
Micron has two unions in Taiwan, one at its Taoyuan site and one at its Taichung site. Both have pushed for a formal profit-sharing system, the kind rivals Samsung and SK Hynix already use. Samsung gives 10.5% of its chip operating profit to employee bonuses, and SK Hynix commits to sharing 10%.
Profit sharing of that kind is still uncommon in Taiwan, which is why the dispute has drawn attention from the government. President Lai Ching-te has urged both sides to negotiate in good faith.
Under the new plan, Micron will pay quarterly bonuses to employees worldwide, starting right after each quarter's results are finalized. Half will be paid in cash and half in stock, and the stock vests after one year.
The size of each quarter's bonus pool will be tied to the company's after-tax operating profit, minus its expected capital spending for the next quarter. Micron says it will keep enough money for factory expansion and research.
The first payouts are expected in late November or early December.

Micron is also changing its annual performance bonus system. The cap on company-goal bonuses rises from 200% to 250% of target, and top-rated employees can receive up to 500%. In 2026, Micron paid each employee NT$1 million, about US$32,000.
For Taiwan staff, Micron is raising the employer pension contribution from 8% of salary to 10%. An engineering manager earning NT$150,000 a month would receive about NT$15,000 more each month in company contributions.
Employees will also get three extra paid days off, and shift allowances will rise from December 1. Micron says it will make a second round of pay adjustments before the end of its fiscal second quarter of 2027, which runs to about the end of February 2027, to narrow the gap between new and existing employees.
Micron reached an early agreement with the Taichung union on October 21. The Taoyuan union says its views were not fully considered, and its leaders held a symbolic strike on October 22. Some Taichung members are also reported to be unhappy, and questions remain about whether the agreement reflects the views of all members.
Micron's Taiwan chairperson, Lu Donghui, thanked the unions for holding back from a full strike and said the company will treat both sites the same.
He said both unions are making the same demands, so terms and benefits will be aligned across Taiwan. Government labor officials were present during negotiations, and both sides' lawyers confirmed the process before signing.
