Anthropic's first public filing for its IPO has opened the books on one of the world's fastest-growing AI companies, revealing extraordinary revenue growth alongside a headline net loss that substantially overstates the deterioration in its underlying operations.

The Claude developer filed its Form S-1 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on October 26, seeking a Nasdaq listing under the ticker ANT. The preliminary prospectus has yet to specify the number of shares to be sold or an expected price range, meaning the offering's valuation and fundraising size remain undetermined.
For the first six months of 2026, Anthropic generated US$16.29 billion in revenue, compared with US$1.16 billion a year earlier, representing roughly 14-fold growth. That follows full-year revenue of just US$41 million in 2023, US$386 million in 2024 and US$4.59 billion in 2025, highlighting how quickly Claude has moved from commercial launch into large-scale enterprise deployment.

A loss mostly on paper
The most eye-catching number in the prospectus is Anthropic's US$80.75 billion net loss for the first half of 2026, widening sharply from US$12.97 billion during the same period a year earlier.
However, the bulk of that loss did not come from operating the business.
Anthropic recorded a US$72.39 billion non-cash expense from changes in the fair value of convertible notes, derivative liabilities and simple agreements for future equity. The company said those charges were driven primarily by rising valuations of outstanding convertible financing instruments as Anthropic's enterprise value increased.
Its actual operating loss narrowed to US$693 million from US$2.14 billion a year earlier, while operating margin improved from negative 184% to negative 4%. On an adjusted basis, Anthropic reported US$1.62 billion in operating income and US$2.67 billion in adjusted net income for the first half of 2026.
The distinction is important for investors assessing the IPO. The US$80.75 billion reported loss does not represent equivalent cash consumption, and the company's operating economics improved substantially even as its financing-related accounting charges ballooned.

Anthropic also generated US$3.93 billion in operating cash flow during the first half of 2026, reversing US$1.51 billion of cash used in operations a year earlier.
Growth runs on usage and compute
Anthropic's revenue model is becoming increasingly consumption-driven. Consumption-based revenue reached US$13.06 billion in the first half, accounting for about 80% of total sales, while subscription revenue contributed US$3.22 billion.
By September 30, Anthropic had more than 11,900 customers generating at least US$100,000 in trailing-12-month revenue, more than 1,900 generating at least US$1 million, and roughly 250 exceeding US$10 million. The company also reported approximately 900% net revenue retention under its own methodology, reflecting exceptionally rapid expansion in spending among existing customers.

The growth comes with a heavy infrastructure burden. Compute and infrastructure expenses reached US$8.95 billion during the first half of 2026, equivalent to about 55% of revenue, underscoring how directly Anthropic's financial model depends on turning increasingly expensive compute into higher-value enterprise usage.

Cash-rich at an inflection point
Still, Anthropic enters the public markets with substantial liquidity. As of June 30, it held US$131.65 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, after raising US$141.1 billion in aggregate capital.
The IPO therefore arrives at an unusual financial inflection point. Anthropic is no longer simply a heavily funded research laboratory absorbing losses in pursuit of frontier models. Its revenue base is scaling faster than operating expenses, cash flow has turned positive, and adjusted profitability has emerged.
The larger question for public investors is whether that operating leverage can persist once revenue growth normalizes and Anthropic's rapidly expanding compute requirements begin demanding an even larger share of capital.
