Murata targets mass production of its AI power substrate next year

Murata Manufacturing plans to begin mass production next year of iPaS, the power substrate it has spent several years developing for AI chips, a step that would carry the world's largest multilayer ceramic capacitor maker out of the passive components it dominates and into the substrate layer itself. The company is targeting annual sales of JPY50 billion (US$325.56 million) within 18 months of that launch, according to The Elec , which reported the plan after Murata showed the product at the KPCA Show 2026 in Incheon on September 9.
The commercial bet
That JPY50 billion target is modest against Murata's existing base — roughly 5% of the JPY936.4 billion in capacitor sales the company booked in the fiscal year ended March 2026, per Murata's investor disclosures — but it targets the fastest-growing part of its business. Murata forecasts capacitor sales of JPY1.16 trillion for the current fiscal year, a 23.6% increase, driven by data center demand.
Pricing puts iPaS at the top of the market. "It is a high-priced product, so our customers will be big tech companies rather than makers of general-purpose products," a Murata official told The Elec , adding: "It should be in mass production next year." The Elec reported that expected customers are hyperscalers and other big technology firms building their own AI chips, with the product going into AI accelerators, GPUs, and high-performance computing systems rather than general-purpose silicon. Murata has been discussing adoption with GPU and AI accelerator customers and had been targeting commercialization in 2026.
What iPaS is
Murata describes iPaS on its corporate technology site as "a substrate solution that incorporates proprietary capacitor and inductor technologies directly onto the substrate," with electrical characteristics and dimensions customizable per application. Rather than mounting discrete capacitors and inductors on a board, it builds their function into an ultra-compact multilayer substrate, freeing surface area for chip mounting.
The line splits in two. Capacitor iPaS uses a 0.3 to 0.35mm thick substrate with internal through-holes and flat copper electrodes, a construction Murata says minimizes equivalent series inductance and supports vertical power delivery. Inductor iPaS handles currents exceeding 10A, with customizable coil diameter and wire width and a closed magnetic circuit design that cuts leakage flux. Murata positions both at AI data center power modules, package substrates, accelerators, optical transceivers, and systems drawing more than 100A, and says the next step is combining both on a single substrate.
The development trail is long. Murata first showed samples at FLEX Japan in 2023 and demonstrated an iPaS-based power module at ECTC in 2024 that cut the number of surface-mounted capacitors by more than 60% while keeping voltage-fluctuation characteristics similar to conventional designs, The Elec reported.
Why power is moving into the substrate
The pull is physics. Low voltage and very high current mean even short conductor paths waste meaningful power, pushing designers toward vertical power delivery — putting the power module directly beneath the accelerator instead of alongside it. Embedding the passives shortens that path further. Eelco Bergman, chief business officer at Saras Micro Devices, told EE World that embedding the tiles directly between the power conversion module and the load enables vertical power delivery, describing capacitor tiles embedded into a substrate core typically 0.8mm to 1.6mm thick.
Murata will not have the field to itself. Saras is embedding its own capacitors and inductors into substrates and PCB laminates; Infineon's TDM2454xx puts a smart power stage inside the package substrate at a claimed 2A per square millimeter, according to Electronic Design ; and Ferric is pursuing integrated voltage regulators, with founder and chief executive Noah Sturcken saying its Fe1766 "achieves an industry-leading current density of 4.5A/mm2 with over 93% conversion efficiency."
The substrate layer is also the industry's tightest bottleneck. Japan's Ibiden and Shinko Electric Industries together hold an estimated 70% of the high-end flip chip ball grid array market, and expanding lines takes 18 to 24 months on equipment lead times, Tech Times reported from KPCA Show 2026. Whether iPaS hits its 2027 target will depend less on the physics than on yields.
