XPeng's Turing chip expands beyond cars

XPeng Motors is extending its self-developed Turing AI chip from intelligent electric vehicles (EVs) into humanoid robots, broadening the processor's role in the company's Physical AI strategy. Originally designed for intelligent driving, the chip is now also used in XPeng's IRON humanoid robot. On September 8, the company launched its robot production line, with the first IRON completing automated final assembly.

XPeng said in May 2025 that the Turing AI chip completed its first design tape-out in 2024 and was scheduled to enter vehicle production in the second quarter of 2025. Chairman He Xiaopeng said at the time that the chip would work with XPeng's proprietary models as the "intelligent power" behind its AI vehicles.
XPeng has since introduced the chip across selected models. Some vehicles use three Turing chips, delivering a combined effective computing performance of 2,250 TOPS. XPeng's second-generation Vision-Language-Action (VLA) model, launched in 2026, also uses the Turing chip as its on-device AI computing platform.
XPeng has not disclosed cumulative Turing chip shipments, making it difficult to estimate total volume. Supply-chain sources say the chip's foundry, packaging, and testing requirements have benefited related suppliers, including Taiwanese companies. With three chips used in some vehicles, broader adoption across XPeng's model line would increase chip demand alongside vehicle sales.
The Turing chip is also moving into XPeng's robotics business. In an August financing update, the company said its high-end general-purpose IRON humanoid robot uses three Turing AI chips, providing 2,250 TOPS of effective computing performance. IRON has 76 degrees of freedom across its body, including 21 in each hand, and can run Physical AI models on-device.
XPeng has since brought its IRON production line into operation, with the first robot completing automated final assembly. The company previously said IRON was scheduled to enter mass production by the end of 2026, with deliveries beginning in 2027. The Turing chip therefore marks a progression from automotive intelligent-driving deployment into robots, Robotaxis and other Physical AI applications.
XPeng now positions the Turing AI chip for "AI vehicles, flying cars and AI robots," while developing the processor across electric vehicles, Robotaxis and humanoid robots.
For the semiconductor supply chain, broader deployment of the Turing chip across vehicles, Robotaxis and robots would increase demand for wafer fabrication, packaging and testing. AI processors generally require high compute density alongside more complex packaging and testing capabilities, giving related foundry and backend suppliers exposure to XPeng's Physical AI expansion.
XPeng's roadmap is becoming increasingly clear: deploy the Turing chip first in intelligent vehicles, pair it with VLA models for on-device AI, then extend the same computing platform into the IRON humanoid robot. The next points to watch are IRON's production scale, further Turing chip penetration across new vehicle models, and adoption in additional Physical AI devices.
