AUO, Innolux accelerate shift from displays to AI, CPO, advanced packaging

Taiwan's panel makers posted mixed August results as the industry's strategic focus shifts beyond monthly revenue toward AI, advanced packaging and co-packaged optics (CPO). AUO and Innolux, the island's two largest panel makers, are accelerating capacity reductions and asset sales while redirecting capital and technology toward higher-growth businesses. For smaller and mid-sized players, however, the path beyond displays remains far less defined.

AUO, Innolux post divergent August results
AUO reported consolidated revenue of NT$23.102 billion (US$730.84 million) in August, up 13.4% from July but down 5.9% year-over-year. Revenue for the first eight months of 2026 reached NT$183.394 billion, a 1.8% decline from the same period last year.
Innolux posted August consolidated revenue of NT$18.697 billion, down 1% month-over-month but essentially flat year-over-year, rising 0.02%. For the first eight months, revenue totaled NT$167.931 billion, up 11.9% year-over-year.
The contrasting monthly figures underscore how product mix and demand continue to shape the display industry. Yet investors are increasingly looking beyond short-term fluctuations to whether panel makers can reduce their dependence on the traditional display cycle.
Plant sales accelerate as companies reshape portfolios
Both AUO and Innolux have been reducing the weight of their core display operations through capacity adjustments and asset disposals. The strategy is designed not only to address excess capacity and market-share pressures, but also to monetize non-core or lower-efficiency assets and redeploy capital into businesses with stronger long-term potential.
Innolux accelerated its divestment program in 2026, selling its second and fifth plants, along with a module plant, in the Southern Taiwan Science Park. The transactions had a combined value of NT$22.055 billion.

AUO has moved even more aggressively. At the end of July, it sold its L3D/L5D plant at Hwa Ya Technology Park in Taoyuan to Quanta Computer for NT$19.7 billion, followed by the sale of its Kaohsiung Luzhu C5E plant to Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) for NT$6.3 billion. In September, AUO sold its Singapore plant to Western Digital Singapore for SGD350 million (US$275.59 million), bringing the total value of its 2026 plant-sale transactions to NT$34.753 billion.
From panels to AI infrastructure
The asset sales are closely linked to a broader strategic shift. As AUO and Innolux trim display capacity, they are channeling more resources into the AI supply chain, particularly advanced packaging and CPO optical communications.
The companies are seeking to leverage decades of experience in large-size glass processing, handling, alignment and uniform deposition. This expertise is being applied to develop technologies such as through-glass via (TGV), a key technology for advanced substrate and packaging applications.
Advanced packaging and CPO carry different technical requirements and barriers from conventional display manufacturing. However, panel makers can potentially repurpose existing large-format glass-processing equipment and process expertise, creating areas of differentiation while complementing semiconductor and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) partners.
For AUO and Innolux, the transformation is therefore more than a diversification exercise. They are attempting to convert established manufacturing capabilities into new industrial value and create a growth trajectory beyond displays.

Smaller makers face a harder transition
The challenge is more pronounced for Taiwan's smaller and mid-sized panel makers, whose transition strategies remain less clear.
HannStar Display reported consolidated revenue of NT$930 million in August, up 7.1% from July and 8.0% year-over-year. Shipments of small- and medium-size panels totaled 15.3 million units, up 2.7% month-over-month, while shipments of large-size and branded products fell 28.0% to 120,000 units.
Giantplus Technology reported August revenue of NT$707 million, down 0.30% from July and 10.43% from a year earlier. Revenue for the first eight months totaled NT$5.644 billion, down 1.03% year-over-year.
Transformation becomes the key measure
The August figures show that Taiwan's panel industry remains sensitive to product mix and demand conditions, with performance varying significantly among companies. But the next phase of competition is increasingly about integration with the AI and semiconductor supply chains rather than panel output alone.
For AUO and Innolux, capacity reductions and plant sales are providing both funding and strategic room to pursue new opportunities. By extending their accumulated expertise in large-panel processing into advanced packaging, AI-related semiconductor applications and high-speed optical communications, the two companies are betting that emerging businesses can eventually offset declining exposure to conventional displays. In doing so, they aim to establish a new growth model for Taiwan's panel industry.
