FitTech shifts from LED to optical communications, eyes InP relief

FitTech is pivoting away from the crowded LED market into optical communications, with outsourced chip testing and sorting orders set to rise month by month from the third quarter as a shortage of indium phosphide (InP) materials that had constrained shipments in the first half of 2026 gradually eases. The company said it has already secured outsourced orders from at least two major customers, while downstream customers have recently raised their 2027 order outlook.
FitTech's advanced manufacturing equipment for silicon photonics (SiPh) is also entering verification with major European and US companies or unicorn startups, giving the company a new growth driver for the medium to long term.
General manager Chiu-Tien Hsu said LED now accounts for only a limited share of outsourced business and its revenue contribution keeps falling, mainly because competition in China is too intense. FitTech is avoiding that red-ocean market and shifting toward optical communications, where margins are higher and technical barriers are steeper. As AI computing power and data transmission at data centers surge, demand for laser light sources continues to climb. FitTech's long-term goal is to gain influence in overseas supply chains outside China.
The company previously offered testing services for VCSELs, but now supplies testing and sorting processes for edge-emitting lasers such as DFB and EEL chips. That shift has sharply lifted both technical requirements and average selling prices (ASPs). In the first half of the year, however, tight InP supply slowed the ramp-up of optical communications laser customers and pushed actual shipments behind initial estimates. Hsu said the bottleneck began easing from the second quarter of 2026, with outsourced shipment momentum turning notably stronger in the third quarter and expected to peak for the year in the fourth quarter, while overall demand visibility now extends directly into 2027.
Optical communications takes center stage
In its business structure, FitTech is accelerating portfolio optimization. Traditional LED equipment, once the main revenue source, is no longer a focus and is now retained only in part as customized outsourcing to maintain stable cash flow, while high-value outsourced testing for optical communications laser chips takes center stage.
FitTech said that in the first half of 2026, equipment sales and outsourcing each accounted for about half of revenue. Within outsourcing, optical communications testing will rise rapidly in the second half and could even surpass LED outsourcing, becoming a key pillar for margin expansion and revenue growth.
To meet strong customer demand for outsourced testing, FitTech completed construction of its new Taichung plant in 2025 and has about 240 chip probers and sorters installed there. As InP supply gradually returns to stable volume, both current customers and their downstream clients have recently raised capacity forecasts for 2027, and the company could eventually move toward an installed base of more than 300 machines.
Besides the clear momentum in outsourced chip probing and sorting, FitTech said it is also building out next-generation SiPh and co-packaged optics (CPO) technologies and conducting validation, with demonstrations shown during SEMICON Taiwan 2026. Its active-alignment silicon photonics coupling bonder can be used in CPO and NPO-related products to meet the coupling needs of 1.6T and 3.2T optical communications. The SiPh single-die prober is designed for testing PICs, helping filter out defective dies in advance, and also supports electrical testing for EICs.
Hsu said the related customized equipment has already been delivered to leading European and US companies for early-stage validation and process development, with later shipments to follow the customers' production schedules.
Hsu added that capital expenditure in 2026 will be NT$400-500 million (US$12.6-15.8 million), adjusted dynamically based on customers' forecast orders. FitTech will keep expanding its optical communications probing outsourcing business to provide stable cash flow, and expects optical communications outsourcing to grow significantly in the second half, with revenue contribution potentially reaching as high as 50%. At the same time, FitTech said its in-house equipment gives it both cost and technology advantages, helping it secure a foothold in advanced optical transmission processes and creating two major growth engines.
