Xiaomi unveiled its new wide-fold Xiaomi 18 Fold on the evening of the 7th to address demand and competition in the foldable smartphone market. Despite a recent smartphone market slowdown caused by surging memory prices, Xiaomi has kept up a rapid launch pace, including the new Redmi Note 17 series and the Poco F9 series.
Market observers say Xiaomi's recent product strategy shows it is expanding its AIoT ecosystem, boosting mid- to high-end smartphone sales, and sharpening product positioning, all as part of a push to keep annual handset shipments above 100 million units this year.
To respond to Samsung Electronics, Huawei, and Apple rolling out foldable smartphones, Xiaomi also unveiled the new Xiaomi 18 Fold on the 7th. The device uses the company's in-house Xring O3 AI flagship chip, pairs it with the Xring O3 AI computing architecture, and comes preloaded with HyperOS 4, which is optimized for AI functions.
Xiaomi also redesigned the hinge and upgraded the battery, fast-charging, and camera module specifications, hoping to win over consumers.
Looking at the positioning of Xiaomi's recent products, the newly launched Redmi Note 17 series added a Pro Max model for the first time, aiming to lift the series' positioning. Xiaomi is also using durability and long battery life as its main marketing themes.
For the Poco F9 series, Xiaomi introduced Ultra and Pro versions to compete, highlighting major upgrades in display, imaging, audio, and battery endurance, while targeting new purchases and replacement demand from mobile gamers.
Mobile phone retailers said Xiaomi's string of new product launches is expected to give its smartphone shipments a boost in the third quarter of 2025. Adding more premium models should also help improve phone profitability and ease pressure from rising memory costs.
However, it is worth noting that, as of early 2026, the market had originally expected Xiaomi's smartphone shipments this year to approach 170 million units, but rising memory prices and Xiaomi's reduced shipments of low-end volume models have led to a possible decline in total shipments to about 95 million units.
Xiaomi had also hoped that memory price increases would ease in the second half of the year and that it could lift shipments back to around 110 million units by relaunching mid- and low-end phones. But with the memory shortage potentially lasting until 2027, the odds of prices turning down in the near term remain low.
Given cost considerations, Xiaomi's move to prioritize volume growth at this point may not be the best decision.
Industry watchers also broadly expect the overall smartphone market to remain weak in 2027, with a return to growth not likely until 2028. For mobile phone brands, that leaves the timing of any new round of price cuts or sales offensives as a decision that must be weighed carefully.
