Panasonic Energy eyes JPY1 trillion yen AI storage revenue by 2028

Panasonic Energy, the battery unit of Panasonic Holdings, is betting big on energy storage for AI data centers as demand for backup batteries from AI data centers surges. The company said it will keep energy storage systems (ESS) as a core growth driver and flex investment plans to match market demand.
Panasonic Energy president and CEO Kazuo Tadanobu told reporters in Tokyo on September 10 that ESS revenue from data centers could reach JPY1 trillion (US$6.5 billion) in the fiscal year ending March 2029, and climb to JPY1.5 trillion by the fiscal year ending March 2031.
According to reports from Kyodo News, Sankei , and Nikkei , Tadanobu said rising power-stability requirements for AI servers are boosting demand for battery backup units (BBUs) installed in racks.
These products do more than provide power during outages. They also cover sudden GPU power spikes and smooth loads, making them one of the company's fastest-growing businesses in recent years.
To meet rising orders, Panasonic Energy has begun adjusting capacity and its regional footprint. Its second plant in Mexico will start mass production in September 2026, while a third plant is scheduled to come online in fiscal 2027.
The Kansas plant in the US will begin mass-producing cells for data centers from fiscal 2028. The company also plans to lift the local procurement ratio for power components to more than 50% by fiscal 2028 to strengthen its customer-near manufacturing model.
On investment pace, Panasonic Energy plans to spend a total of JPY350 billion on its data center ESS business from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2028. Tadanobu said the current plan can cover near-term demand, but flexible investment will be made if needed.
He added that standardized cell sizes give the company room to retool production lines as technology evolves, improving utilization of existing assets.
Tadanobu also said Panasonic's edge comes from its integrated development capability across cells, power supplies, and systems, which allows it to deliver solutions with higher safety standards in one package.
He said the company's long-running co-development ties with data center operators, along with internal technology integration in areas such as thermal management, will be key weapons as Panasonic Energy expands its AI-related business.
Amid questions over whether EV battery investment is shifting, Panasonic Energy said it has already repurposed some existing automotive battery lines for AI data center use after North American EV market growth slowed, with relatively limited friction thanks to the high degree of process commonality.
Tadanobu also said that beyond the main BBU line, capacitor backup unit (CBU) products from Panasonic Industry that use supercapacitors will launch within fiscal 2026, underscoring the group's push to transform from a single battery supplier into an AI infrastructure solutions provider.
