Samsung, LG ramp up India for AI cooling and appliances

India is emerging as a new battleground for South Korea's two electronics giants, with Samsung Electronics using the country as a production and supply-chain base for AI data center cooling equipment and LG Electronics investing hundreds of billions of won to build a third home appliance plant. But whether India's fast growth and huge population will translate into real earnings remains the biggest test.
According to IT Chosun , citing industry sources, Samsung is strengthening its production footprint in India around AI data center cooling solutions.
In fact, Samsung's European air-conditioning company FläktGroup, acquired in 2025, opened a new production facility in Pune, Maharashtra, India, in August 2026, as a manufacturing base for HVAC solutions for customers in India and the Asia-Pacific region.
The Pune facility represents an investment of about EUR5.7 million (US$6.6 million), with more than 12,000 square meters of production space. It mainly makes AHU, FWU, CRAH/CRAC, heat exchangers and other HVAC equipment for data centers and industrial sites, with annual capacity expected to reach up to 6,500 units once fully operational.
Samsung's expansion of HVAC capacity in India is being driven largely by the country's rapidly growing data center market. India's data center power capacity is projected to rise from about 1.2 GW in 2025 to about 4 GW by 2030.
As demand for AI and cloud services climbs and more data centers are built, demand for cooling equipment is also rising. Samsung's investment in India is not only aimed at local market expansion, but also at broadening its production and supply chain across Asia-Pacific.
However, expanding capacity in India does not mean the HVAC business will deliver results immediately. Winning large orders in major markets such as North America will be the key factor shaping future performance.
Meanwhile, after Noida and Pune, LG is building its third home appliance production base in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The total investment is about KRW800 billion to KRW900 billion (about US$580 million to US$650 million), and construction is now more than 75% complete, with LG pushing to begin production early within 2026.
Once the Sri City plant starts operating, LG will have a full manufacturing system in India with annual capacity of 2 million TVs, 3.6 million refrigerators, 3.75 million washing machines and 4.7 million air conditioners. About 95% of the products LG sells in India are already made locally, helping boost price competitiveness and shorten delivery times.
LG's continued expansion is being driven by the rapid growth of India's home appliance market.
According to data from the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), India's air conditioner market expanded from 6.5 million units in fiscal 2018-2019 to 16.5 million units in fiscal 2024-2025. Over the same period, refrigerator output rose from 14.5 million units to 27.5 million units, while washing machine production is also expected to grow from 7 million units to 12.6 million units.
Strong economic growth is also supporting the market's expansion. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts India's economic growth at 6.4% in 2026.
With more than 1.4 billion people, along with a growing middle class and ongoing urbanization, demand for home appliances is rising as well.
Overall, while Samsung and LG are both stepping up their India bets, their strategies differ. Samsung is positioning India as a base to expand AI data center cooling capacity and its supply chain, while LG is targeting fast-growing appliance demand and using India as a production hub for Global South markets.
Still, some observers say high growth and a massive population alone are not enough to guarantee strong investment returns. Samsung must turn its new India capacity into global AI data center orders, while LG must convert its expanded India production into earnings.
