Samsung boosts Galaxy A series output as rivals cut lower-end phones

Samsung Electronics has moved to expand production of mid- to low-end smartphones from August to November 2026, according to South Korean media Maeil Business Newspaper . The plan comes as rising memory chip prices are forcing other handset makers to pull back on lower-margin models, and Samsung is looking to use the shift to gain more smartphone market share.

Under the production plan cited by industry sources, Samsung expects to make 33.7 million Galaxy A series phones during the period, accounting for 58% of its planned output of about 58 million smartphones and tablets. If tablets are excluded, the A series share would be even higher, underscoring how heavily Samsung is leaning on its mass-market lineup.
The cheapest models get the biggest push
The company has also concentrated output on its cheapest models: about 18 million units are allocated to the A17 and A18, which together account for 53% of total A series production. Globally, these models are positioned as entry-level devices with strong price competitiveness. The A17 is priced at about KRW310,000 (about US$230.3), compared with KRW2.54 million for Samsung's S26 Ultra 1TB.
A market-share bet as costs climb
Although mid- to low-end phones are more exposed to cost pressure, Samsung is still assigning nearly 60% of its overall production plan to the A series. That suggests the company is prioritizing shipments and market share over short-term profit protection as memory prices climb.
Samsung has publicly framed market-share expansion as part of its second-half 2026 strategy, while analysts and industry sources said the company may be betting that holding handset volume steady will be less damaging than cutting shipments and losing share. The same chip inflation is also hitting Chinese rivals including Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, which have relied on competitively priced models but now face a tradeoff between raising prices and sacrificing margins. Counterpoint Research said the global smartphone market shrank 7% in the second quarter of 2026 from a year earlier, while Xiaomi and Vivo shipments fell 26% and 21%, respectively, as Samsung's shipments rose 9%.
