Samsung SDS broadens AI push from software to factory robots

Samsung SDS is using its enterprise AI strategy to move beyond office automation and into factory robotics, betting that its systems-integration experience can turn fragmented robot fleets into centrally managed production tools, according to CHOSUNBIZ and BusinessKorea .
At REAL Summit 2026 in Seoul on September 8, the company presented what it called a "multi-dimensional AI full-stack" strategy and said it would support customers across AI infrastructure, platforms, solutions, consulting, development, implementation, and operations. Samsung SDS said the event drew about 15,000 participants on-site and online at Seoul's COEX Convention Center.
CEO Lee June-hee framed the pitch as a shift from AI adoption to business redesign. Samsung SDS's own release quoted Lee as saying that "AI changes work, but AX changes business," and said he cited McKinsey data showing 88% of companies had adopted AI in at least one business function, but only 6% reported a meaningful profit contribution. The Korea Times separately reported the same figures and said Lee described a clear gap between adopting AI and generating outcomes.
The company said it will use a "client zero" approach, first applying AI to seven internal mega-processes, including development, purchasing, quality, management support, business execution, marketing, and sales. It also plans to expand its forward-deployed engineer (FDE) workforce to about 200 people by the end of this year, aiming to place technical staff directly at customer sites.
OpenAI and Anthropic featured prominently in the plan. Samsung SDS said it will participate as Korea's first pilot partner in OpenAI's Daybreak Partner Program, using OpenAI frontier models to support services that automate security vulnerability detection, verification, and patch-solution delivery. OpenAI Korea country lead Kim Kyung-hoon and Anthropic Korea head Choi Ki-young appeared at the event, according to Samsung SDS and BusinessKorea . Samsung SDS also said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supported the partnership in a video message, calling the company a "global top-tier partner."
The larger strategic extension is robotics transformation, or RX. Samsung SDS said it has built manufacturing execution systems, equipment, and logistics automation for about 430 manufacturing customers over 25 years, and plans to introduce a robot orchestration platform from 2027. The platform is meant to connect and operate production equipment and robots as a single system, coordinate robots from different manufacturers, detect failures in real time, and reroute work so a factory does not stop if one robot breaks down.
To build the robotics ecosystem, Samsung SDS said it has formed or expanded partnerships with physical AI companies, including Walden Robotics. Seoul Economic Daily reported that Samsung SDS has assembled a Team REX partnership with 10 physical AI and robotics firms, including Rainbow Robotics and Walden Robotics. Samsung SDS also plans roughly KRW10 trillion (US$7.43 billion) in strategic investments through 2031, drawing in part on KRW1.2 trillion in new funding secured through cooperation with KKR.
Samsung SDS also previewed Brity Works Cowork, a workplace AI agent scheduled to launch commercially in October. BusinessKorea said the tool is designed to take a work objective, create a plan, and handle tasks such as research, report writing, email delivery, and calendar scheduling, while Samsung SDS said it includes governance features intended to prevent external data leakage when connected to enterprise systems.
