Walsin Technology(2492.TW)

AI server boom reshuffles MLCC supply, opening a rare expansion window for Taiwan makers

Strong demand for AI computing is creating a capacity squeeze across the passive-component industry, opening new opportunities for Taiwanese suppliers.
Supply-chain sources said Yageo and Walsin are set to benefit from tight multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) supply. Beyond long-term orders from AI server and memory customers, Taiwanese suppliers have gained orders redirected from Japanese and South Korean rivals in consumer, automotive, and industrial markets since the first half of 2026, keeping book-to-bill ratios high.
Industry sources expect shortages of mid- to high-end MLCCs to last through 2027, given the heavy component requirements of AI servers. If edge AI demand also rises, tight supply could extend into 2028.
Murata Manufacturing plans to phase out selected MLCC products used in consumer, automotive, and industrial markets over the next three years while reallocating capacity toward higher-end products amid stronger AI-related demand. The shift recalls its 2018 pivot toward automotive applications, with AI now taking the lead.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO) has signed long-term agreements with more than 10 global customers and is expected to raise fourth-quarter OEM and ODM prices for general-purpose X5R products by about 25–30%, while high-end X6S products used in AI servers could rise 10–20%. Direct-supply customers account for more than 80% of its MLCC revenue. A Taiwanese supplier said automotive customers are also shifting some existing SEMCO orders elsewhere.
Japanese and South Korean suppliers still hold a technology advantage, particularly in compact, ultra-high-capacitance MLCCs for AI servers. Murata and SEMCO dominate this segment, while Taiyo Yuden and TDK also retain clear leads.
With transferred orders increasing, book-to-bill ratios staying high, and backlogs growing, Yageo and Walsin are resuming MLCC expansion after years of caution following the 2018 market downturn. Investment remains relatively measured.
Yageo said AI demand lifted its MLCC utilization rate to 90% within six months. It plans further investment in Kaohsiung and Suzhou in 2026, focusing on equipment additions and production-efficiency improvements in existing plants. New capacity is expected to come online gradually in the third and fourth quarters.
Including simultaneous expansion in tantalum capacitors and resistors, Yageo's total capacity is estimated to be 15% higher at the end of 2026 than at the end of 2025.
Walsin said its MLCC utilization rate reached 80–85% in June and remains high. To support expansion over the next two years, the group has raised its 2026 capital expenditure budget from an initial NT$500 million–NT$1 billion (approx. US$16 million–US$32 million) to at least NT$3 billion. Combined MLCC and resistor capacity is expected to increase by 10–15%, with a larger expansion planned for 2027.
To fund machinery purchases and plant engineering, Walsin recently approved a second domestic unsecured convertible bond issue targeting NT$4.5 billion. It has also leased a 6,691-ping factory in Yangmei, Taoyuan, from Walsin Lihwa through April 2037, underscoring its capacity-expansion plans.
Sources said the new demand cycle led by AI is tightening supply beyond MLCCs and tantalum capacitors, with some shortages also emerging in resistors and inductors.
Capacitors remain the industry's main focus because of their much higher usage. Industry sources estimate that a single AI server rack requires roughly 300,000–400,000 capacitors, 50,000–100,000 resistors, and 5,000–10,000 inductors, making capacitors by far the largest component category by unit volume.
