Loongson raises funds to expand CPU and GPU development as AI inference boosts domestic chip plans

Chinese CPU maker Loongson recently announced a CNY2.3 billion (approx. US$342.7 million) capital increase, with the funds mainly going into information technology chips and core CPU and GPU technologies. More than CNY1.4 billion is allocated to CPU-related projects, making it the largest investment area in the fundraising plan.
According to Loongson's funding plan, about CNY971 million will go to chip research, development, and industrialization based on its "Xnm" process, while another CNY485 million will fund key CPU core technologies. The two items combined exceed CNY1.4 billion. General-purpose GPU key core technologies will receive CNY360 million, and CNY483 million will be used to replenish working capital.
Loongson's 9A1000 general-purpose GPU is positioned for the entry-level market, and the company will continue promoting products such as the 9A2000. In the near term, the priority remains building independent GPU products and ecosystem capabilities. On the CPU side, Loongson is continuing to develop the 6600 and 7000 series. The 6600 series has completed design finalization and uses the LA864 processor core.
Single-core performance of the product is about 50% higher than the 3A6000. The company also plans to use architectural and design optimization to reach the performance level of mainstream international CPUs using "Xnm" process technology under "1Xnm" process conditions. The 7000 series will move further toward higher performance.
As agent AI is gradually introduced into data centers, CPUs are no longer only responsible for traditional computing; they also need to handle task orchestration, workflow control, tool invocation, and data exchange, raising requirements for single-core performance, memory bandwidth, and I/O capabilities.
Recent reports of tight supply and price increases for server CPUs from Intel and AMD have drawn attention, reflecting the growing importance of CPUs in data centers as AI server demand expands, as well as shifts in global CPU supply and demand. For domestic CPU makers in China, this also offers a signal to watch changes in local substitution demand.
Loongson has also been adjusting its efforts to open up new markets in recent years. The company said its business used to focus mainly on government office applications, with products centered on PCs, but it is now moving into industrial applications and expanding into server and terminal markets. Loongson added that it typically takes 1.5-2 years from chip samples to full productization in the server supply chain, so any scale-up in related products will take time.
Financially, Loongson posted revenue of about CNY272 million in the first half of 2026, up 11.64% year-over-year. Net loss attributable to shareholders narrowed by 23.96% year-over-year to CNY224 million, while gross margin rose to 52.08%. With revenue still relatively limited, the capital increase will not only support core technology development but also replenish operating funds for future product development and market expansion.
