LCD supply could tighten by 2028 as Taiwan sells its fabs to chipmakers

LCD panel supply could tighten around 2028 as Taiwan manufacturers exit the segment faster than expected, while China uses profits from LCD to ramp OLED investment. The shift is being driven by shrinking LCD line capacity, rising demand for advanced semiconductor packaging, and continued growth in large-screen TVs.
Omdia senior research director for displays David Hsieh said at Omdia's Korea Display Conference that Taiwan panel makers are leaving LCD faster than expected, with some lines likely to be shut, reorganized, or sold to semiconductor companies in 2027 or 2028.
China's LCD cash fuels costly OLED expansion
In addition to competitive pressure from Chinese LCD makers, the move is being accelerated by growing demand for advanced semiconductor packaging. Innolux announced in 2026 that it would sell its Fab 5 in the Southern Taiwan Science Park and related facilities to an ASE subsidiary for about NT$14.9 billion (US$468.7 million), while Fab 4 was sold earlier to TSMC for more than NT$17.1 billion.
AUO has also accelerated its asset revitalization and transformation, including the sale of its Hwa Ya plant in Taoyuan to Quanta Computer and its C5E plant in Kaohsiung Science Park to ASE.
Even so, overall LCD demand has not disappeared. Omdia said the global TV market has gradually entered a mature phase, with annual shipments expected to stay at about 240 million to 250 million sets over the long term. However, screen sizes continue to rise, with demand for ultra-large models such as 85-inch TVs increasing while that for 32-inch and 43-inch sets shrinks.
Because larger TVs require more panel area, panel demand by area will keep growing even if TV shipments do not rise materially. Omdia expects TV panel demand by area to break 200 million square meters around 2027 and reach about 236 million square meters in 2032.
Against that backdrop, as Taiwan makers continue to retreat and Chinese panel makers hold most of the world's LCD capacity while adjusting utilization to control supply, LCD supply could gradually become tighter around 2028. As LCD capacity becomes increasingly concentrated in China, the LCD business also becomes an important source of cash to support Chinese panel makers' OLED investment.
Hsieh said Chinese panel makers currently control about 80% of global LCD capacity and keep LCD prices relatively stable by managing utilization rates. As depreciation burdens ease on existing lines, profitability in the LCD business is also improving.
Omdia estimates that operating margins for LCD TV panel businesses are now about 15% to 25%, making LCD a key profit and cash flow engine for Chinese panel makers.
OLED losses persist despite aggressive investment push
By contrast, Chinese panel makers' OLED businesses are still broadly loss-making. Although OLED penetration in smartphones has already exceeded 50%, the mobile market is under pressure from memory shortages and rising prices in 2026, while Chinese handset brands continue to push for lower OLED panel prices.
As a result, Chinese panel makers including BOE Technology Group, TCL China Star Optoelectronics, Visionox, and Tianma Microelectronics have struggled to turn a profit on OLED alone and continue to use cash flow from LCD to fund OLED investment and production-line expansion plans.
OLED is almost the only growth area left in the display industry, so even if they must absorb losses, Chinese panel makers are still pursuing aggressive investment strategies.
As competition in 8.6-generation OLED lines heats up, Samsung Display, Visionox, LG Display, and TCL China Star are adopting different technologies, and the competitive focus has shifted beyond capacity expansion to material utilization on large substrates, panel cutting efficiency, alignment precision, yield, and process integration.
Park Jin-han, an Omdia director, said South Korea and China currently have about a 7:3 ratio of OLED production capacity for mobile PCs. Looking only at 8.6-generation OLED capacity for mobile devices and PCs, China is expected to overtake South Korea by 2028, with the South Korea-to-China ratio reaching 2:8.
However, South Korean makers are still expected to dominate higher-margin premium products.
