Apple added flat US$100 to every iPhone and rebuilt A20 Pro around memory

Two things happened at Apple's September 9 launch that belong in the same story: the company raised the price of every iPhone it sells by exactly US$100, and it introduced a chip whose headline improvement is a wider memory interface, without saying how much memory sits behind it.

A flat surcharge, applied across the lineup
The increase was not confined to the new models. iPhone 17e went to US$699 from US$599, iPhone 16 to US$799 from US$699, iPhone 17 to US$899 from US$799, and iPhone Air to US$1,099 from US$999. iPhone 18 Pro replaced iPhone 17 Pro at US$1,199 against US$1,099, and iPhone 18 Pro Max at US$1,299 against US$1,199, with base capacity unchanged at 256GB. Last year's Pro increase came bundled with doubled entry storage; this one does not. Only iPhone Duo, a new line at US$1,999, has no predecessor to be measured against.
Six models, one number, one day. Tim Cook attributed it to the memory and storage constraint he had described in June, when he said Apple could no longer absorb the cost and that in more than 40 years he had never seen anything like it.
The uniformity in price increases backs Cook's statement. A flat dollar amount applied across a range spanning US$599 to US$1,299 is regressive by construction: 16.7% at the bottom, 14.3% on iPhone 16, 12.5% on iPhone 17, 10% on iPhone Air, and 8.3% at the top.
A margin decision would scale with price, because margin is a percentage. A fixed surcharge is what a fixed per-unit input cost looks like; the additional dollars Apple now pays for the DRAM and NAND inside a given smartphone do not vary much with each model's retail price.
Two lines were exempt, making them the control group
Apple Watch Series 12 holds at US$399, exactly where Series 11 launched, and Apple Watch Ultra 4 holds at US$799, exactly where Ultra 3 launched — both carrying a new Health Sensing System, new optical and electrical heart sensors, and a new S11 chip. In Series 12's case, it also includes Ceramic Shield 2 and a new ceramic case option.
AirPods went the other way. AirPods 5 arrive at US$129 with Active Noise Cancellation, the price AirPods 4 charged without it, while the wireless-charging-case model lands at US$149 against US$179 for AirPods 4 with ANC — a US$30 cut on a better-specified product.
These are the two lines in Apple's portfolio that carry almost no DRAM or NAND, and they are the two that saw no price increases. Prices generally don't hold flat across two consecutive generations, or get cut while adding noise cancellation, if the component whose price quadrupled occupies a meaningful share of what you are building.
Apple set this up in June
None of it arrived without warning. As DIGITIMES reported, Cook said on June 18 that price increases had become unavoidable given DRAM and NAND increases, and that Apple could no longer keep absorbing them. His emphasis was speed: component prices were climbing faster than he had seen in four decades while supply kept shrinking. He later called the episode a hundred-year flood, and told during the August 3 earnings call that prices were still rising and Apple was still paying more.
The company acted within a week. On the evening of June 25, it repriced globally across iPad, MacBook, Mac, HomePod, Apple TV 4K and Vision Pro, making Apple one of the few large technology firms to pass memory costs to consumers rather than absorb them. The 13-inch MacBook Air went to US$1,299 from US$1,099, the 14-inch MacBook Pro to US$1,999, iPad Air to US$749 from US$599, and the base iPad to US$449 from US$349, a 29% increase on Apple's highest-volume tablet. Counterpoint Research data cited at the time put memory and storage prices at four times their level three quarters earlier.
The one left out of the June price surges was the iPhone, but by September, that's no longer the case.

The chip was rebuilt around the same constraint
While Apple was repricing for memory, it was also re-architecting for it. A20 Pro carries a 50% increase in memory bandwidth over A19 Pro, which Apple's Sri Santhanam called "the widest memory interface we've ever shipped in an iPhone and an important enabler for all of the performance gains on A20 Pro." That framing is unusual: the 6-core CPU with integrated neural accelerators, the 7-core GPU up to 40% faster, and the doubled Neural Engine at 32 cores were all presented as downstream of the interface rather than alongside it.
Widening it meant rebuilding the package. Apple introduced custom packaging inspired by its M-series chips, placing the silicon die side by side with memory rather than stacking it, which "removes the memory from the thermal path of the SoC and lets us connect the silicon directly to the vapor chamber."
In a package-on-package arrangement, DRAM sits between the logic die and whatever cools it. Moving memory sideways clears a direct route from die to chamber, which is what makes the next-generation vapor chamber worth building: three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro's, deionized water cycling through the system, 80% recycled stainless steel, more thermally conductive graphite, and an industry-first nanotwin copper layer. The claimed result is up to 40% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.
Memory determined the chip architecture, package geometry, and thermal design of this generation.
