Memory chipmakers have become the fastest-growing source of demand for ASML, and the two largest of them have reportedly accepted higher replacement-part prices from the Dutch company. Attention now turns to TSMC, ASML's largest customer and, according to earlier reports, an opponent of price increases, as the lithography supplier prepares to charge more for its most critical tools.
ASML expects memory net system sales to grow around 75% in 2026, against around 10% growth in logic, CFO Roger Dassen said on the company's third-quarter earnings call on October 14. He attributed the memory surge to customers' capacity expansion and "the increasing adoption of EUV on advanced DRAM nodes." In the third quarter, memory accounted for 46% of net system sales and logic for 54%.
DRAM leads the build-out
president and CEO Christophe Fouquet said the memory investment is "mostly DRAM to be clear," and that ASML has previously indicated that the ratio between logic and memory would most probably shift toward memory. In discussions about orders for 2029 and 2030, ASML said DRAM makers are currently "a bit more aggressive on the buildup" of capacity, while interest from logic and DRAM customers is broadly equal because "you need both memory and logic to get some AI chips." Those extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography discussions exclude China, the company added.
The customer base is widening, too. "We continue to see, in fact, new customers on Low NA EUV, especially when it comes to DRAM," Fouquet said. At the leading edge, Samsung plans to use high numerical aperture (NA) EUV in DRAM mass production by 2028, according to a joint Samsung-ASML announcement in September.
Logic has not stalled, however. Dassen said advanced logic, a subset of the logic segment, is expected to grow more than 25% this year. Looking at 2027, he said, "Memory comes close. But I still believe that logic will outweigh memory in the total book of business for next year."
Korean customers accept a blanket 10% rise
Memory makers' appetite for tools is giving ASML leverage beyond new systems. ASML will raise prices by 10% across replacement parts supplied to South Korea, covering all parts for its EUV and deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography systems, for deliveries starting in January 2027, Korean outlet The Elec reported on October 11. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix accepted the increase after discussions with their purchasing organizations, following notification through ASML's South Korean subsidiary in early September, the report said.
According to The Elec , ASML has traditionally adjusted prices for individual parts when raw material costs rose sharply, and a blanket 10% increase is unusual. "ASML also appears to be seeking a larger share of the profits its customers are making," an industry official told the outlet.
The parts business sits inside ASML's installed base management segment, which covers service, parts, and upgrades for tools already at customer sites. Those sales reached EUR3.3 billion (US$3.69 billion) in the third quarter, almost EUR0.4 billion above guidance, and are expected at around EUR3.7 billion in the fourth quarter. ASML expects the segment to grow around 50% in 2026.
On the call, ASML did not address parts pricing separately. Asked whether the increases apply to systems, services, and spare parts, Dassen said, "exactly how we do it, Krish, I'm not going to share," but confirmed that prices are rising for "the most critical products" and that upgrade prices "will also follow this pattern."
The TSMC question
TSMC is the customer whose response matters most. The Information previously reported that ASML notified Chinese chipmakers and other customers of a 10% increase in DUV equipment prices, with some accepting, while TSMC, ASML's largest customer, reportedly opposed the increase.
ASML did not name any customer on the call. Dassen said price conversations started in July "have been completed and have indeed led to pricing increase," and in a pre-recorded results interview released the same day he said: "That's been done with the key customers." Fouquet said there had been "a clear acceptance that maybe the overall value in the ecosystem is shifting." The company did not say whether TSMC was among the customers that signed on.
The executives framed the increase in terms aimed at long-term partners. Dassen called the talks "conversations on fairness," said ASML is "not opportunistically pricing," and ruled out annual increases: "We would not be looking at repeating this every year or so. That is not the plan." When an analyst asked about yearly price rises, Fouquet quipped, "Our customers are listening."
ASML's technology ties with TSMC are also deepening. In September, the two companies began an industry-wide initiative to develop larger 12-inch EUV photomasks for High NA EUV, aiming for a pilot line by 2031 and production in 2033. TSMC plans to introduce High NA EUV into high-volume manufacturing in 2030, two years after Samsung. Fouquet said TSMC's push for larger masks signals that customers expect to use High NA more over time, because "no one will really bother to go to 12-inch mask on High NA" otherwise.
The pricing effect will build gradually. Dassen said the increases will have no impact in 2026, will start to show in average selling prices and gross margin in the course of 2027, and will take full effect from 2028.
