LG Innotek tackles glass substrate microcrack issue as 2028 production race heats up

LG Innotek is applying internally developed artificial intelligence to semiconductor glass substrate manufacturing, targeting microcracks, one of the technology's toughest yield challenges. The move comes as industry forecasts and supplier roadmaps increasingly point to around 2028 as an early window for initial glass-core substrate production.

ET News reported that LG Innotek is accumulating data on microcracks of different shapes and sizes to improve the precision of its AI inspection model. The model is being trained not only to classify defect types but also to assess how different defects affect downstream glass substrate processing. The company plans to combine high-resolution 3D precision inspection with proprietary AI vision technology to improve detection capability while shortening interpretation time.
Inspection speed is critical to commercialization. Glass introduces numerous variables that can generate microcracks, while comprehensive inspection using conventional approaches can lengthen cycle times enough to undermine mass-production efficiency. Detecting defects without sacrificing throughput is therefore becoming an important part of the yield equation.
That inspection bottleneck is also drawing equipment suppliers into the race. On September 8, Taiwan-based Spirox unveiled its SP7000G high-speed TGV crack inspection system, designed for high-volume glass-core manufacturing. The system can scan a full 510 x 515 mm glass substrate in under 20 minutes and detect internal microcracks after metallization and ABF build-up processes, highlighting the industry's push to improve defect detection without sacrificing production throughput.

Microcracks can emerge during demanding process steps, including through-glass via (TGV) formation, metallization, and substrate cutting. At micrometer-scale dimensions or smaller, they can be difficult to detect completely with existing methods. If left undetected, subsequent processing can lead to glass breakage or delamination, while even a single microcrack can force the scrapping of an entire high-value finished substrate and severely reduce yield.
The cracking challenge is industry-wide. Japan's Shinko Electric Industries has linked internal glass cracking during dicing, known as SeWaRe, to differences in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the glass core and build-up resin layers, underscoring the reliability risks manufacturers must control as production scales.
The push toward glass is being driven in large part by the packaging requirements of AI and high-performance computing. SEMI and Global Net Corp (GNC) identify thermal stability, flatness, rigidity, electrical performance, and closer CTE alignment with silicon among the advantages glass cores can offer over organic cores as package sizes and performance requirements increase. LG Innotek has similarly highlighted glass's superior flatness and ability to support finer circuit patterning compared with conventional organic-core FC-BGA structures.
SEMI's 2026 glass-core substrate study projects that initial production could begin around 2028 in selected high-performance applications, rather than an industry-wide transition to high-volume manufacturing. Qualification progress, supply-chain readiness, industry standards, and unresolved manufacturing bottlenecks remain constraints. The study projects a 67.2% compound annual growth rate from 2028 to 2040 under the average of its market-development scenarios.
Competition heats up
For suppliers, a more immediate signal is that competitors are already moving beyond basic development into capital spending, reliability evaluation and customer qualification.
SKC on September 4 announced a KRW281 billion (approx. US$210 million) cash investment in its US subsidiary Absolics as part of a capital increase aimed at accelerating glass substrate commercialization. SKC holds a 70.05% stake in Absolics and plans to deploy about KRW590 billion into the glass substrate business over three years.
Absolics' overall capital increase totals KRW401.1 billion, with the proceeds earmarked for glass substrate commercialization. The company has completed construction of its plant in Georgia, where embedded glass-substrate samples have completed preliminary evaluation and entered reliability testing as the company advances customer validation.
It invested KRW417.4 billion from 2022 through 2025 and plans KRW589.6 billion of investment between 2026 and 2028, including KRW237.5 billion for test operations and KRW102.6 billion for facilities. Its original 2024 commercialization target has been delayed, highlighting the difficulty of establishing stable yield and reliability.
Dai Nippon Printing (DNP), meanwhile, has set a more explicit production timetable. The Japanese company established a pilot line for TGV glass-core substrates at its Kuki plant in Saitama, with phased operation beginning in December 2025. DNP said in its December 2025 roadmap that the line would support mass-production validation, with sample provision scheduled to begin in early 2026 and preparations aimed at starting mass production in fiscal 2028.
DNP's 2026-2028 medium-term plan reinforces that direction, listing construction of a glass-core mass-production line among its semiconductor investments and identifying commercialization of TGV glass-core substrate technology for next-generation semiconductor packaging as a strategic initiative.
The competitive question is therefore shifting from whether glass-core substrates can be manufactured to who can first combine fast and accurate inspection, stable yield, proven reliability, customer qualification and scalable output.
LG Innotek formally announced its glass substrate business at its March 2024 shareholders' meeting and has since established a pilot line at its Gumi site, where prototype reliability evaluations are underway. The company remains at the pilot and evaluation stage rather than commercial production.
If LG Innotek's AI inspection can materially improve microcrack detection without sacrificing throughput, it could provide a lever on both yield and manufacturability. Whether that becomes a commercial advantage will depend on whether those inspection gains can be sustained at production scale and translated into higher yield as the company moves toward qualification and commercialization.
