Wuliangye skips carmaking, turns liquor waste into silicon-carbon anodes

Chinese baijiu (white liquor) producer Wuliangye, or "Five Grain Liquid," is moving into battery materials by turning distillers' grains, a liquor-production by-product, into biomass porous carbon for silicon-carbon anodes.
Wuliangye has set up Yibin Puhua New Materials Technology with Sichuan-based HYQC New Materials Technology to target consumer electronics, power batteries, and potentially all-solid-state batteries, adding a new growth avenue beyond its core liquor business.
According to The Guru , 36Kr , and HYQC, the partners unveiled new silicon-carbon anode and biomass porous carbon products at the 2026 World Power Battery Conference.
Puhua New Materials was established in Yibin, Sichuan, on August 6, 2026, with registered capital of CNY150 million (≈ US$22.4 million). Wuliangye-related entities own 60%, including 48% held by Sichuan Yibin Push Group, while HYQC, incubated through an academician workstation led by Minggao Ouyang, holds 40%.
Distillers' grains become porous carbon for silicon-carbon anodes
Wuliangye's battery-material strategy centers on converting distillers' grains from baijiu production into biomass porous carbon for silicon-carbon anodes.
According to HYQC, the process uses microbial fermentation to create pores in the feedstock, followed by low-temperature catalytic treatment. The resulting material combines high electrical conductivity, strong particle integrity and a large specific surface area.
As a carbon carrier in silicon-carbon anodes, the porous carbon helps reduce silicon expansion during charging and discharging, improving cycle life. The material can ultimately be used in consumer electronics, power batteries and all-solid-state batteries.
HYQC said the route using distillers' grains offers a cost advantage over mainstream coconut-shell-based porous carbon while turning a liquor-production by-product into a higher-value material. The partners have worked together for more than a year, with Puhua New Materials intended to move the technology from R&D toward commercial-scale production.
Wuliangye leadership shift sharpens new-energy focus
Puhua New Materials' launch coincides with a leadership change at Wuliangye. Min Deng, who has a background in chemicals and lithium-battery materials, took the helm in 2026, heightening interest in whether new-energy materials will become a larger business for the group.
The move comes during a deep adjustment in China's baijiu industry. Wuliangye's 2025 revenue fell 54.55% year on year to CNY40.53 billion, while net profit attributable to the parent dropped 71.89% to CNY8.95 billion.
The decline reflected weaker demand, sales, and inventory pressure, but also corrections to accounting errors involving revenue recognition, meaning it cannot be read simply as a halving of end-market sales.
Revenue and profit rebounded from a low base in the first half of 2026, but the baijiu sector remains under inventory, pricing and demand pressure, keeping the search for growth beyond liquor strategically important.
Yibin battery cluster gives Wuliangye a natural testing ground
Wuliangye also benefits from its base in Yibin, one of China's largest power-battery clusters. Since CATL established operations there in 2019, the city has built a supply chain spanning cathode and anode materials, separators, electrolytes, structural components, and battery cells.
Yibin produced 176GWh of power batteries in 2025, accounting for about 16% of China's output and 11% globally. More than 100 battery-related projects are already based there, giving Puhua New Materials a potential platform for product validation and market entry.
Unlike earlier speculation that Wuliangye might "build cars," the latest move is more closely tied to its core business. Wuliangye-related entities previously held only small automotive stakes; this time, the group is using distillers-grain resources to enter battery materials.
Commercializing porous carbon derived from distillers' grains for silicon-carbon anodes will still require improvements in material consistency, yield and cost, along with lengthy customer qualification.
The strategic appeal lies in linking Wuliangye's supply of distillers' grains with silicon-carbon technology and Yibin's battery ecosystem. If scaled successfully, the model would extend both the circular economy and the battery supply chain rather than amount to a simple cross-industry investment.
