Verizon, Corning strike multi-billion-dollar fiber deal for broadband and AI buildout

Verizon and Corning have agreed to a multi-billion-dollar supply deal that could shape broadband access and artificial intelligence infrastructure well beyond the US. The pact underscores how telecom networks are becoming a shared foundation for consumer internet, enterprise connectivity, and the data-heavy systems driving the next wave of AI services.
Verizon said it will buy more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber and related connectivity products from Corning under an agreement running from 2027 through 2032, as it expands broadband, mobile, and long-haul network capacity. The company said the deal supports both faster home and business internet expansion and the backbone required by AI hyperscalers.
"The network of the future"
Kyle Malady, chief executive of Verizon Business, said the company is building "the network of the future at an unprecedented scale" and is moving toward a converged architecture that combines mobile and broadband services. He said the same network can support families, businesses, and high-capacity AI workloads.
Expanding broadband's reach
Verizon said the fiber supply will help accelerate its goal of reaching 40 million to 50 million broadband passings. That expansion is expected to extend fiber-to-the-home and local business connections while also linking cell towers, enterprise data centers, and residential areas to a single high-capacity backbone.
Fueling the AI backbone
The company has also tied the agreement to its AI Connect strategy, which focuses on ultra-dense fiber along major long-haul corridors to connect data centers. Verizon said the buildout is intended to meet the low-latency and high-throughput demands of large language models and other AI systems, while improving access to faster internet for consumers and institutions.
Corning scales up manufacturing
Corning said the partnership builds on three decades of collaboration with Verizon. Mike O'Day, senior vice president and general manager of Corning Optical Communications, said the companies see generative AI and broadband expansion as part of the same opportunity, adding that Corning plans to scale US manufacturing to support the project.
The agreement includes Corning's Contour Flow Cable, which is designed to increase the amount of optical fiber that can be placed within existing conduit. Verizon said that should help maximize infrastructure investments while adding network capacity and bandwidth.
Fiber as critical infrastructure
The deal highlights a broader trend in which telecom operators are positioning fiber networks as critical infrastructure for both everyday connectivity and the global AI economy.
