STMicro sees AI sales accelerating as factory transfers hold key to margin recovery

STMicroelectronics expects rapidly expanding AI infrastructure sales and stronger automotive demand to support growth into 2027, but its largest gross-margin gains will depend on customer approvals allowing older factories to close, CFO Lorenzo Grandi said at Citi's Global TMT Conference on September 9.

Grandi described demand exceeding available capacity across several businesses, with bookings extending further into 2027. Silicon photonics is driving the near-term AI opportunity, while power delivery offers a longer-term opening. Manufacturing transfers remain central to improving profitability in silicon carbide and the broader company.
Bookings remain above billings
"Our book-to-bill remained well above one," Grandi said, indicating orders continued to exceed billings. He described conditions as broadly unchanged from the second-quarter results announcement, with strong bookings across the markets ST serves. He said automotive bookings were also well above one, while lead times for some industrial products were reaching about 50 weeks.
Distribution inventories had normalized overall, but microcontroller stocks were particularly lean. Grandi said they were substantially below the 12–13 weeks ST considered normal, following several quarters in which distributors sold more to customers than they purchased from ST.
AI targets rise, with connectivity leading
Grandi put AI/data-center revenue expectations above US$1 billion for fiscal 2026 and well above US$2 billion for fiscal 2027. Those figures describe that application area, rather than total company sales; he did not provide a company-wide annual revenue target in the discussion.
Connectivity currently supplies the strongest revenue contribution, through silicon photonics, microcontrollers, and BiCMOS electronic integrated circuits (EICs) for optical transceivers. Grandi said customers were seeking multiyear agreements covering capacity, volumes, and pricing, with many including advance payments.
ST plans to expand capacity incrementally within its existing 300 mm infrastructure. Grandi emphasized that silicon-photonics investment could also serve other technologies, including microcontrollers, providing flexibility if the product mix changes.
He said ST's components and packaging capabilities positioned it to follow customers into NPO and CPO optical architectures. Power delivery is a smaller business today: ST is building a portfolio for 800 V architectures and expects meaningful revenue after 2028. Connectivity will remain the principal near-term growth driver.
Margin gains depend on factory closures
ST's third-quarter gross-margin guidance is 37%, Grandi said. That includes roughly 70 basis points of underutilization charges and about 50 basis points of extra costs associated with duplicating products and technologies during its manufacturing reshaping program.
Those burdens should ease progressively, with duplication costs becoming marginal around mid-2027. Better manufacturing efficiency and product mix should also help; Grandi described silicon photonics as accretive to ST's gross-margin target.
The largest improvement, exceeding 400 basis points, depends on closing two 200 mm factories and two 150 mm silicon-carbide factories. ST has completed the capacity and process-transfer work within its control and is supplying samples for customer qualification, he said.
The resulting margin increase will be a step change when facilities shut, rather than a smooth progression. Grandi placed that timing around late 2027 or early 2028, depending on customer approvals, while explaining the route toward the mid-40s target range raised by the interviewer.
Pricing should provide a smaller benefit. Grandi expects average prices to be broadly flat to slightly higher in 2026, with increases more than offsetting input-cost inflation. He anticipated stable to slightly higher pricing in 2027 if current conditions persist, while noting next year's negotiations had not begun.
Satellite growth broadens the customer base
Grandi said satellite revenue was approaching EUR1 billion and expected cumulative revenue well above EUR3 billion over the next three years. ST was already shipping to new customers.
He described ST's approximately 90% share with its established Starlink customer as unsustainable as the business expands. However, customer growth and new entrants could offset a declining share of that existing relationship. He said average satellite profitability was in line with ST's gross-margin target, although returns differed among user terminals, satellites, and gateways.
Automotive and SiC recover
Automotive demand was strengthening across multiple quarters, with customers repeatedly raising forecasts, Grandi said. He saw no inventory buildup and pointed to immediate customer escalations when deliveries were delayed, including during a second-quarter disruption at ST's Singapore factory.
Silicon-carbide revenue should grow at a double-digit rate in 2026 and return to around EUR1.01 billion in 2027, based on programs already secured. European automakers were contributing to the recovery.
Capacity remains a constraint. ST intends to move from 150 mm to 200 mm production rather than expand the older format. Grandi expects more competitive manufacturing in Catania and China, alongside technology and customer-mix improvements, to support a return to profitability in power and discrete around late 2027 or early 2028, subject to the transfers taking time.
