STMicroelectronics ties AI data center carbon cuts to power design, not location

STMicroelectronics (ST) recently shared its perspective on balancing AI growth with sustainability during a press conference in Taiwan. The company emphasized that controlling carbon emissions from AI data centers depends largely on internal rack design rather than simply building facilities in countries with high renewable energy adoption.
A single power rack contains hundreds of power supplies. If individual power supply efficiency is not optimized, the resulting downstream emissions can easily outweigh the upstream savings gained from a cleaner power grid. When assessing environmental impact, emissions from grid location and system design should be evaluated separately.
Citing Nordic countries as an example, ST noted that local grid emission factors are significantly lower than Taiwan's, meaning nearly all remaining carbon footprint stems from the electronic components themselves. Based on this observation, ST aims to further reduce system-level carbon emissions by optimizing circuit board layouts, power semiconductors, and memory selection.
Compared to standard configurations, ST's approach achieves a 10% to 30% reduction in data center emissions. This figure does not account for the additional carbon savings realized by extending hardware lifespan and reducing replacement frequency through lower power consumption.
In 2020, ST announced its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2027, positioning it to become the world's first carbon-neutral integrated device manufacturer (IDM). Using 2018 as a baseline, the company reduced its global carbon emissions by over 50% by the end of 2025. Renewable electricity accounted for 80% of its power mix by late 2025 and is projected to reach 100% by 2027.
To secure green energy, ST has signed long-term power purchase agreements in Europe and India spanning 10 to 20 years. On the manufacturing side, its water recycling rate reached 51% in 2025, and 97% of its waste was diverted from final disposal, surpassing its internal target of 90%.
ST estimates that using recycled materials for key components, combined with 100% renewable electricity during manufacturing, can lower the product carbon footprint of a power management IC by more than 90%. This is because recycled materials minimize emissions from mining, refining, and transportation while reducing reliance on critical raw materials, a factor that becomes increasingly important as data centers scale up.
ST also revealed that nearly all major Taiwanese manufacturers are now requesting product carbon footprint reports for commercial part numbers in power and thermal solutions. These requests go beyond inventory planning; companies are verifying that their overall system designs remain below specific carbon thresholds.
More recently, clients have begun demanding carbon footprint roadmaps for unreleased products, along with predictions for emissions reductions during the usage phase. This shift indicates that Taiwanese tech firms are actively targeting future system designs rather than merely complying with current carbon regulations.
