Applied Materials used its investor day to argue that AI will let it outgrow the chip equipment market through 2030. Investors, however, focused on what the company left out: a forecast for wafer fab equipment (WFE) spending, the industry-wide figure that drives demand for its tools.
At its SEMICON West investor breakfast in San Francisco on October 13, the US toolmaker targeted a non-GAAP gross margin of about 54% and a non-GAAP operating margin of about 40% by calendar 2030, along with a gain of more than 2% in WFE market share from 2025.
Applied expects leading-edge foundry-logic, DRAM, and advanced packaging, the segments where it ranks first in process equipment, to account for about 75% of WFE growth from 2025 to 2030.
Services carry the clearest revenue target. Applied Global Services revenue is set to rise more than 20% in 2026 and exceed US$12 billion by 2030, a mid-teens compound annual growth rate. Tim Deane, head of the services unit, said the number of chambers connected to the company's AIx analytics platform should grow from 37,000 today to more than 90,000 by 2030. The display and photonics businesses, reported as "other," are targeted at more than US$2 billion.
CFO Brice Hill's presentation put fiscal 2026 revenue at an estimated US$34.3 billion, capping a decade of 12% annual growth, with non-GAAP gross margin at 50%. Hill said reaching 54% means improving about 100 basis points a year, which will require new, more enabling tools and price increases to offset costs such as rare earths and fuel. Applied also plans to more than double its R&D lab and manufacturing capacity by 2030 and to return 80% to 100% of free cash flow to shareholders.
AI demand reshapes the roadmap
CEO Gary Dickerson said an agentic AI factory pod consumes two to four times as many wafers as a generative AI pod. Prabu Raja, group president of the Semiconductor Products Group, said Applied's served market in leading-edge logic grows from about US$12 billion at 3nm to US$15 billion at 1.4nm, with its share rising 3% over that transition. He expects advanced packaging revenue to exceed US$5 billion within a few years, with HBM packaging above US$1 billion this year.
In process control, Keith Wells, who leads the Imaging and Process Control Group, said optical inspection and eBeam revenue each grew about 50% from 2025 to 2026. The company expects eBeam alone to generate US$2 billion in 2026.
Missing forecast and modest targets disappoint
The main disappointment was the missing forecast. "We're not going to give a specific WFE forecast today," Dickerson said. Hill said the figure is "changing at a rapid rate." Investing.com reported that investors had been counting on a clear WFE outlook. Management also warned that growth would not be smooth, citing cleanroom capacity, supply chain limits, and data center energy availability.
The Motley Fool noted that Applied gave no total revenue target for 2030. The services goal is roughly double the unit's fiscal 2025 revenue of about US$6.4 billion, and the outlet said a "mere" doubling of overall revenue over five years may have disappointed investors hoping for more.
Analysts also questioned the share target. Tim Arcuri of UBS said a bear could argue the 2% gain would only return Applied "to where you were in 2024." In response, executives said the target assumes continued growth in restricted Chinese accounts that Applied cannot serve under current export rules. They added that Applied's access to China's WFE market fell from 100% in the early 2020s to closer to 70% in 2025.
The rest of the sector was also falling. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was on a six-session losing streak, and according to Benzinga , SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics slid after China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) reported progress on a 4F² DRAM architecture. Lam Research, KLA, and ASML fell 3.5%, 3.4%, and 2.6%, respectively, while Applied fell twice as much as any of them. Applied's stock was 36% below its June 30 record close of US$723.
Cantor sees a buying opportunity
Cantor Fitzgerald analyst C.J. Muse reiterated an Overweight rating and a US$850 price target. According to Benzinga , he called the 54% gross margin target conservative and argued that CXMT's new architecture is not a near-term threat. "We would be buyers on weakness," Muse said. He named China, where Applied has the most domestic exposure among equipment makers, as the main risk.
