Infineon has finished acquiring India-based C2i Semiconductors, a maker of software-defined multiphase controllers and smart power stages used in AI data centers. The acquisition indicates the growing importance of power stability and efficiency as the number of energy-hungry AI processors rises.
The deal was first reported in August. No specific financial terms have been announced.
The Bengaluru-based company specializes in software-defined power management solutions, which combine power semiconductors with software and digital tools to adjust power conversion and the system in real time. As AI workloads rise, data centers must ensure stable power supplies and deal with load fluctuations or power losses while accommodating growing power density.
In its announcement , Infineon noted the complementary relationship between the two companies, with Infineon pairing its expertise in power semiconductors and systems with C2i's strengths in digital power technology.
What C2i brings to Infineon
C2i's employees will join Infineon's Power Systems division, and the two companies are expected to work together on developing the intelligence, efficiency, and scalability of power delivery within AI infrastructure. This work includes substrate-integrated voltage regulators (SIVRs), which use vertical transmission power paths and are considered the next evolution in AI power delivery.
"C2i Semiconductors brings exceptional expertise in software-defined power management and system-level power architectures, backed by a highly experienced engineering team," said Adam White, president of Infineon's Power Systems division, in a statement.
"By combining these capabilities with Infineon's semiconductor technologies, application know-how, manufacturing capabilities and global customer reach, we will accelerate innovation in power delivery solutions for AI data centers and create significant value for our customers."
In May, C2i announced the tape-out phase of its smart power chips for AI infrastructure. C2i CEO Ram Anant said the company's platform could deliver over 96% power conversion efficiency, compared with 94% in other solutions. Around that time, the company also raised US$16.7 million in Series A financing.
What the deal means for India
Infineon's acquisition of C2i marks the expansion of its footprint in India, where it currently employs roughly 2,800 people across multiple sites. At this year's Semicon India, the company said its headcount in India had grown 28% compared with last year. Infineon has described its incorporation of C2i as supporting Bengaluru's role as a digital innovation hub.
