不做 LG Display(034220.KS)

LG Display (LGD) has canceled the planned sale of its automotive LCD module business at its Nanjing subsidiary, losing a potential KRW104.1 billion (about US$72 million) payment and delaying plans to improve production efficiency.
LGD has gradually withdrawn from the LCD business in recent years while restructuring around OLED. However, steady demand for automotive LCDs has made it difficult for the company to stop supplying the products.
According to South Korean media outlet DealSite , the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system shows that LGD terminated the transfer agreement for the automotive LCD module business at its Nanjing subsidiary on September 23, 2026.
LGD had planned to sell the business to the Nanjing subsidiary of TopRun Total Solution for KRW104.1 billion (about US$72 million). However, the two sides failed to reach a final agreement on the transaction terms, prompting LGD to withdraw the sale.
The sale was intended to change LGD's production model rather than mark a full exit from the automotive LCD business. In its original announcement, LGD said the business, which it currently operates in-house, would be outsourced after the transfer to improve operating efficiency.
Under the original plan, LGD would no longer directly own the production assets. Instead, an external company would manufacture the modules, while LGD would continue supplying LCD panels to existing customers.
LGD's decision to remain in automotive LCDs reflects the characteristics of the automotive display market. Although the company has exited the LCD TV business and is restructuring around OLED, automakers use different displays depending on vehicle prices and specifications. As a result, they cannot easily switch entirely to OLED at once, leaving substantial demand for automotive LCDs.
An industry source said the automotive LCD market remains large. LGD could eventually exit automotive LCDs if the OLED market expands further, but that point has not yet been reached.
Following the termination of the agreement, LGD's plans to raise funds and improve production-system efficiency have both been derailed. Had the transaction closed, LGD would have received KRW104.1 billion in proceeds and transferred automotive LCD module production to an external manufacturer. With the sale withdrawn, the funds will not be received, and LGD will retain its existing production assets.
Analysts said LGD will need to continue managing production equipment, personnel, and other elements of the manufacturing system while directly operating the Nanjing subsidiary's module business. This makes it difficult to realize the expected efficiency gains from outsourcing.
LGD has not yet announced a specific operating plan following the withdrawal of the sale.
Meanwhile, reports by The Elec and Seoul Economic Daily said TopRun Total Solution had planned to use LGD's existing orders to spread the Nanjing plant's fixed costs and leverage approximately 30% of its idle capacity to pursue customers in China and India.
Following the termination, TopRun Total Solution said it would return to its core automotive backlight unit (BLU) business, continue supplying LGD, and seek new customers in China and Vietnam.
