Huawei has unveiled the Kirin 9050 Pro in its new Mate XT 2 tri-fold smartphone, marking the commercial debut of the LogicFolding architecture behind its Tau Scaling Law and Huawei's first new high-performance Kirin chip introduced at a flagship launch in six years.
The September 7 launch in Guangzhou turns Huawei's vertically integrated logic concept into a flagship consumer product, following its recent disclosure of the technology's density, power and thermal characteristics. The Kirin 9050 Pro layers logic units within a single chip and connects them through vertical interconnects, shortening signal paths to reduce latency and improve performance.
Huawei Consumer Business Group chairman Richard Yu said the Mate XT 2 delivers 42% higher overall performance than the previous Mate XTs, with improvements to both CPU and GPU performance. The chip can handle demanding applications across all three screens simultaneously, open large files faster, and support local AI photo-library organisation.

According to Xinhua , the launch is the first time since the Mate 40 global debut six years ago that Huawei has introduced a new Kirin processor at a flagship product event. Chinese technology outlet Chinastarmarket.cn described the Kirin 9050 Pro as the first flagship chip to commercially implement Tau Scaling Law through LogicFolding.
Kirin 9050 Pro brings LogicFolding into Huawei's flagship lineup
The Kirin 9050 Pro represents Huawei's latest attempt to extract greater performance from chip architecture rather than relying solely on conventional planar scaling. Its LogicFolding design distributes logic across vertically connected layers, effectively replacing some longer horizontal signal paths with shorter vertical connections.
The commercial launch follows Huawei's development of Tau Scaling Law, which focuses on reducing communication time inside chips through vertical integration. The Kirin 9050 Pro now brings that approach into a shipping flagship device, with Huawei positioning the architecture as the foundation for higher performance within the constraints of increasingly complex semiconductor scaling.
The processor powers the second-generation Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design, whose tri-fold display is 3.5mm thick when unfolded and uses a 12.8:9 aspect ratio with 3K resolution. The device supports folding from either side.

Huawei said the outer display uses its Xuanwu Tempered Kunlun Glass , improving drop resistance by 30 times and scratch resistance by 16 times. Its second-generation advanced precision (Tiangong) hinge system uses a five-arc-arm central axis designed to distribute mechanical stress more evenly.
The Mate XT 2 also introduces a privacy display that can be activated by double-tapping the outer screen. Health functions include ECG analysis and heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements by holding the outer display.
Satellite communications have also been upgraded. The handset supports Tiantong satellite connectivity, with satellite acquisition speeds improved by 40%, while a Balong modem increases satellite paging success.
HarmonyOS 7 expands AI while cutting storage use
Huawei also launched HarmonyOS 7, extending AI deeper into its operating system and applications. Huawei's official presentation highlighted upgrades to the ' Celia ' AI assistant, which can review résumés, help users search for jobs and act as an interviewer. It can also answer calls on a user's behalf, including food-delivery calls, and make appointments such as pet-grooming bookings.
HarmonyOS 7 adds AI-based fraud protection, including detection of overseas call forwarding, AI voice alteration, and risky webpages. Huawei also said the operating system supports cross-platform connectivity, including connections with Apple's ecosystem.
The interface introduces spatial-design changes, including notifications that dissolve with a sand-like animation when deleted and new 3D spatial wallpapers.
HarmonyOS 7 also integrates a performance large model trained on 2 billion data points into Huawei's Ark Engine for the first time, according to Xinhua . Its Ark Storage Engine uses what Huawei calls hyperspace storage technology: upgrading from HarmonyOS 6 can free up to 22GB on a 256GB device, 51GB on a 512GB model and 109GB on a 1TB device.
The launches arrive while Chinese smartphone makers face rising component costs. Huawei, Xiaomi and Honor have recently raised prices across several models, with increases linked to higher costs for key components including memory and Qualcomm chips.
Huawei's Mate 80 lineup has reportedly risen by CNY800 (approx. US$119) across all variants, taking the 12GB+256GB model from CNY4,699 to CNY5,499. Mate 80 Pro and Mate 80 Pro Max variants increased by CNY1,000, with the 16GB+1TB configurations reaching CNY8,999 and CNY9,999, respectively.

Xiaomi raised prices across its Xiaomi 17 and Redmi K90 series by CNY200–500, including a CNY500 increase for the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max to a starting price of CNY6,999. Honor raised prices on models including the Power2 and Magic8, with the 12GB+256GB Power2 increasing by CNY600 from CNY2,999 to CNY3,599.
Huawei attributed its increases to higher market prices for key materials and the resulting rise in product costs. Xiaomi cited higher procurement costs for core components, while Honor said pricing and promotions are adjusted according to market demand.
