China's Geely has officially entered the Canadian market and plans to launch its first vehicles there in 2027, expanding its North American footprint. Geely has completed its Canadian corporate registration and begun operations while building local sales and after-sales service networks.
The move marks Geely's further expansion into North America and highlights how Chinese automakers increasingly view overseas markets as key growth drivers.
According to reports by Chinese media outlets IT Home and Sina , Geely will combine the group's resources in vehicle engineering, safety technology, electrification, and smart technologies to develop products and services tailored to Canadian market demand. The automaker also plans to work with dealers familiar with the local market as it gradually establishes its sales and after-sales service systems.
Geely has not yet disclosed the first vehicle models to be launched, pricing, or a specific sales schedule. Details of its product strategy remain subject to further announcements.
Geely's expansion into Canada comes as regulatory and trade conditions across North America continue to present uncertainties. Polestar, the Swedish EV brand owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, said in September, when filing its first-half financial report in the US, that the Bureau of Industry and Security had not approved a specific authorization application submitted under US connected-vehicle rules.
As a result, Polestar expects that vehicles from the 2027 model year onward will be unable to be sold in the US. After existing inventory is exhausted, its US business will focus on repairs, warranties and after-sales support for existing owners.
DIGITIMES previously reported that Polestar faces restrictions on new-vehicle sales in the US because of connected-vehicle rules covering information and communications technology and services. The decision has already affected the company's finances. Polestar's financial report disclosed that the factors resulted in a negative adjustment of approximately US$130 million, involving residual-value guarantees, the net realizable value of inventory and restructuring costs.
From a group-wide perspective, products from Geely, Zeekr, and Lynk & Co are available in more than 100 countries and regions worldwide. Expanding into Canada will add sales locations while testing whether Geely can turn its existing product and technology advantages into vehicle portfolios and services that meet local consumer needs.
For automakers, entering a new market involves more than selling vehicles. They must also establish dealer networks, repair services, parts supplies, and customer support systems to sustain long-term operations.
According to Geely's sales data, cumulative sales from January through September 2026 exceeded 2.235 million vehicles, a record high for the period. Overseas exports reached 797,700 vehicles during the same period, up 169% year-over-year. Exports totaled 106,700 vehicles in September, up 162% year-over-year and marking the fourth consecutive month in which monthly exports exceeded 100,000 units. NEV exports reached approximately 73,700 vehicles, up 403% year-over-year.
