LG bets on in-cabin AI agents as South Korea races to catch China in autonomous driving

LG sees in-cabin AI as a key competitive area for AI-defined vehicles. Daniel Chiang
Rapid advances in China's autonomous-driving technology are increasing pressure on South Korea's auto industry to catch up, and LG Electronics is responding by expanding its push from in-cabin AI experiences and AI agents to an AI-SDV platform as it seeks a foothold in the emerging AI-defined vehicle (AIDV) market.
Hyun Taek Hong, a research fellow at LG Electronics' VS Business Division, said at the recent Autonomous Driving Mobility Expo (AME 2026) in Seoul that software-defined vehicles (SDVs) have yet to fully mature even as AI advances rapidly, making AIDVs an emerging focus for the industry.
LG sees in-cabin AI as a key competitive area for AIDVs, using AI to understand passengers' conditions and intentions and transform vehicles from transportation tools into spaces for work, learning, and entertainment.
Joong Hang Kim of LG Electronics' Smart Mobility Research Institute said the company is studying ways to integrate multiple AI agents inside vehicles. Rather than simply responding to commands, the agents would be able to carry out tasks autonomously, retain memory, and coordinate with multiple sub-agents, allowing them to proactively handle tasks that users would otherwise perform themselves.
LG's vision for automotive AI agents extends beyond the drive itself to before, during, and after a journey, as well as across the vehicle's lifecycle and the user's broader living environment.
Under this concept, autonomous driving represents only one part of what LG describes as "Zero Labor." Once AI takes over driving duties, the time freed up for users can be turned into new in-cabin experiences.
Automotive AI agents could also eventually connect with LG's existing AI Home and home-appliance businesses. If a vehicle detects that a user is particularly fatigued, for example, it could adjust lighting and air conditioning at home before the user arrives.
By linking its appliance, display, and automotive electronics businesses, LG could expand its automotive operations beyond standalone products and make the vehicle a gateway connecting home and lifestyle services, potentially differentiating it from suppliers focused solely on automotive components.
LG is also participating in the development of a common AI-SDV platform targeted for completion by 2029 and is working with the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH) on validation.
The platform is expected to work with Hyundai Mobis' SDV middleware to create a common environment for developing and operating AI and applications across different vehicle models and CPU, GPU, and NPU architectures.
Alongside the platform effort, LG is pursuing R&D in in-cabin multimodal AI, AI memory and automotive AI agents, potentially extending its role from in-cabin services into the software infrastructure supporting AIDVs.
Industry observers say LG's push into automotive AI agents reflects growing concern within South Korea's auto industry over China's rapid technological progress.
Seongsoo Hong, a professor at Seoul National University, said South Korea is still trying to catch up with China in modular autonomous-driving and end-to-end (E2E) technologies, while China has already moved toward vision-language-action (VLA) models incorporating reasoning capabilities.
With advantages in talent, population, and capital, China poses a formidable challenge, and South Korea would struggle to secure market leadership if it simply follows technology paths China has already established, Hong argued.
South Korea nevertheless has strengths of its own, including semiconductor and memory capabilities, globally competitive automakers, and the social infrastructure and networks needed to support new services.
In China, WeChat serves as a service hub linking smartphones, vehicles, and a range of services. While South Korea may face greater service fragmentation, vehicles still hold information smartphones cannot fully replace, including vehicle location, real-time operating conditions, and the driving environment, creating an advantage for the development of automotive AI agents.
For LG, the key challenge will be turning its AI technologies into products and business models that meet automotive-industry requirements.
Automotive AI also faces a much higher reliability threshold than general-purpose generative AI, as incorrect decisions could lead to accidents or recalls. Functional safety, cybersecurity, privacy protection, and reliable connectivity will therefore need to be addressed before volume production.
