AI demand lifts UMC, VIS, PSMC revenue

After mature-node price competition from 2023 to 2025, AI demand has spread from GPUs and HBM to power management ICs (PMICs), power components, networking chips and specialty processes. At the same time, aggressive price cutting by mature-node players in China has eased, pushing quotes for Taiwan foundries broadly higher since the start of 2026.
United Microelectronics (UMC), Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS), and Powerchip (PSMC) have all seen revenue rise, with increases in wafer shipments and pricing, improved capacity utilization, and a better product mix feeding through to results quarter by quarter.
UMC and Intel are co-developing a 12nm process set for trial production in 2027, and the company has also reportedly secured a major advanced packaging cooperation order. VIS is benefiting from strong demand for AI server power management ICs, while PSMC expects operating growth in the fourth quarter of 2026 and 2027 after raising prices for DRAM and logic foundry work.
UMC
UMC reported consolidated revenue of NT$25.045 billion (US$789.6 million) in August 2026, up 5.04% month-over-month and 30.71% year-over-year. It marked the sixth straight month of both sequential and year-over-year growth, the highest monthly level since October 2022 and the third-highest monthly revenue in the company's history. Revenue for the first eight months of 2026 reached NT$178.659 billion, up 14.66% year-over-year.
Gross margin in the second quarter of 2026 was 32.5%, and capacity utilization was about 85%. For the third quarter, wafer shipments are forecast to rise 7-9% quarter-over-quarter, capacity utilization is expected to exceed 90%, and gross margin is projected at 34-36%, driven by rising demand for PMICs, sensors, and MCUs. UMC said 22nm has become an important process platform, and it continues to push customers to migrate from 28nm to 22nm.
On pricing, the company has not adjusted rates for customers under existing long-term contracts, focusing instead on selectively raising prices for new orders, new processes and higher wafer loading. It plans to renegotiate pricing for new orders and capacity with customers in 2027.
As for its partnership with Intel, the two companies are currently collaborating on a 12nm FinFET process, with pilot production expected in 2027 at Intel's Arizona fab and production becoming more meaningful in 2028. UMC is also developing wafer-level packaging and silicon interposers, with related monthly capacity increased from 3,000 to 6,000 wafers, and has reportedly won a major cooperation order from Intel.
In Singapore, UMC is continuing to expand 22/28nm capacity, lifting monthly output from about 12,000-13,000 wafers to 18,000 wafers. It is also planning silicon photonics (SiPh), CPO, and advanced packaging. In July, it delivered its first batch of mass-produced SiPh wafers and reached a mass-production milestone with SILITH.
VIS
VIS reported August 2026 revenue of NT$5.093 billion, up 8.22% month-over-month and 40.48% year-over-year, setting a record for the same period. Revenue for the first eight months of 2026 totaled NT$36.575 billion, up about 18% year-over-year. In the second quarter, wafer shipments rose 11% quarter-over-quarter, average selling price (ASP) increased about 3%, and gross margin improved to 32.3%.
The gains were driven mainly by stronger demand from AI servers and smartphones, while power management products increased to 77% of revenue. For the third quarter of 2026, VIS expects wafer shipments to rise 1-3% quarter-over-quarter, ASP to increase 2-4%, gross margin to come in at 32.5-34.5%, and capacity utilization to reach 90%.
The company has said order visibility is about four months, with AI server power management ICs as the main source of demand. It is also upgrading part of its 8-inch coarse-line-width processes to finer-line-width processes to increase supply of AI power management products.
Its 12-inch Singapore fab produced its first engineering samples in June, with yield above 99%; mass production is expected in the first quarter of 2027, and an opening ceremony is scheduled for September 28 local time.
PSMC
PSMC reported August 2026 revenue of NT$7.009 billion, up 5% month-over-month and 76.19% year-over-year, breaking back above the NT$7 billion mark for the first time in more than four years and setting a new monthly high for 2026. Revenue for the first eight months of 2026 reached NT$44.54 billion, up 47.08% year-over-year. Gross margin rebounded to 35% in the second quarter, and the company expects gradual improvement in the third and fourth quarters.
In July, PSMC raised DRAM wafer foundry prices by about 45%, while 8-inch and 12-inch logic foundry prices were increased by about 10-15%. Because there is a production cycle between wafer starts and output, the impact of the DRAM price hike is expected to become more visible after November, so revenue has not yet fully reflected the increase.
The logic foundry book-to-bill ratio reached 1.4x in the third quarter, with customer demand exceeding existing capacity. Wafer starts for AI server PMICs, MOSFETs, and related power components are increasing, and some capacity is even crowding out mobile PMICs. PSMC is also accelerating its 3D AI Foundry strategy, aiming to lift related revenue to 20% within three years. Its 12-inch silicon capacitors have entered stable wafer-start and shipment stages, while silicon interposers are ramping toward mass production.
On DRAM technology, the company's in-house 1X process is scheduled for mass production in 2027, while the 1P DRAM process developed with Micron is expected to enter mass production in the middle of 2028. The PWF Mini Line is also slated for mass production in the fourth quarter of 2027.
