AMEC is seeking an entry into South Korea's power semiconductor market through MOCVD equipment trials with SK Keyfoundry and Magnachip. The Chinese equipment supplier holds a large share of its domestic MOCVD market but remains unable to supply Samsung Electronics' and SK Hynix's South Korean fabs.

According to ZDNet Korea , AMEC is testing its metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) tools with both companies. The process uses metal-organic precursors to form specific thin films on wafers and is widely used in semiconductor manufacturing, particularly for advanced power semiconductors involving silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN).
SK Keyfoundry, SK Hynix's 8-inch foundry subsidiary, primarily manufactures analog and mixed-signal chips, including display driver and power management ICs. It has recently invested in next-generation power semiconductor processes, including GaN. Magnachip closed its display driver IC business in 2025 to focus on power semiconductors.
Both companies are expanding in next-generation power semiconductors. SK Keyfoundry reportedly secured a commission from a new customer in the first half of 2026 to develop 1,200V SiC MOSFETs.
Their expansion offers AMEC an opportunity to build its limited South Korean presence. Industry observers cite geopolitics, alongside equipment performance, as a barrier to market entry.
AMEC cannot currently supply Samsung's or SK Hynix's South Korean fabs. However, SK Hynix's Dalian fab in China, included in its deal to acquire Intel's NAND flash business announced in the second half of 2020, already uses AMEC products.
Securing supply contracts with SK Keyfoundry and Magnachip could give AMEC a foothold for broader access to South Korea's semiconductor market.
Gerald Yin, a former Applied Materials vice president, founded AMEC in Shanghai in 2004. Much of its founding team came from US semiconductor equipment companies, including Lam Research and Applied Materials.
Front-end etching equipment remains AMEC's core business, accounting for nearly 80% of revenue in 2025. Thin-film deposition and MOCVD are growing businesses, while some of its dry etching tools for advanced processes have entered TSMC's supply chain.
AMEC is also raising its South Korean profile. According to Nate News , its local subsidiary made its first appearance at SEDEX 2026, held at Seoul's COEX in October, displaying etching and deposition equipment, including MOCVD tools.
The company unveiled six new equipment models in September 2026, including tools for SiC production, as it expanded its power semiconductor portfolio. Relationships between South Korean chipmakers and Chinese equipment suppliers remain sensitive. Reuters previously reported that Samsung and SK Hynix began testing AMEC etching tools about two years ago for potential use at their Chinese fabs; both companies denied the report.
